or gary@tnlive.co.uk THE VELVET GOLDMINE Starring role for Penshurst Place

Cinema-goers across the county can see Penshurst Place as never before as the Baron’s Hall and Inner Courtyard have a starring role in the new Mary Queen of Scots blockbuster, which was released in UK cinemas on 18th January. The fi lm is based on the book Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart by Dr John Guy and explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart, played by Saoirse Ronan. The fi lm tells the story of Mary, Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, who defi es pressure to remarry, instead returning to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of her cousin Queen Elizabeth I, played by Margot Robbie, and before long Mary asserts

her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty.

Filming at Penshurst Place took place in October 2017, with lead actress Saoirse Ronan featuring in scenes set in the Baron’s Hall and the Inner Courtyard. The medieval Baron’s Hall is shown at the start of the offi cial trailer for Mary Queen of Scots, providing an atmospheric backdrop for Mary’s execution, one of the pivotal scenes in the fi lm. Meanwhile the Inner Courtyard was used to showcase the solemn procession of spectators waiting to witness Queen Mary’s execution. This is the latest in an impressive list

of fi lm and television credits for Penshurst Place that includes Wolf Hall, The Other Boleyn Girl and The Hollow Crown.

THE ROYAL OAK, TUNBRIDGE WELLS, 9TH FEBRUARY The Velvet Goldmine is essentially a function band who ply their trade playing pub and club venues in the Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells areas. I have to admit I have not seen this fi ve-piece band in their current form but two of the members are known to me and, having experienced their capabilities fi rst hand, this could be a great Saturday night out down at the local – especially if you fancy a boogie or singalong!

FINDING YOUR ‘TWIN FLAME’ The Twin Flame movement is taking the internet by storm – but how do you achieve union with your own Twin Flame? Tunbridge Wells author Theodora F. Izzard’s new book of Twin Flame Meditations and photographs will strike a chord with anyone in a Twin Flame relationship or looking for their ultimate soul mate. Twin Flames are on the lips of everyone – from pop stars (J Lo) to princesses (Sarah Ferguson described her daughter Princess Eugenie’s husband, Jack Brooksbank, as her Twin Flame) – and Twin Flame infl uencers have thousands of followers. Traditional media is increasingly recognising and refl ecting the growing interest in this ancient concept however books on the subject to date have fallen into a narrow spiritual niche. Theodora’s new book (The Choir Press, £8.99) bridges the gap between the spiritual and the urban, to bring Twin Flames into the mainstream and make them accessible for everyone.

THE TRADING POST, TUNBRIDGE WELLS, 9TH FEBRUARY This is a classic combination of two extremely talented local musicians who became friends some eight years ago. As individuals, Jennifer and Lianna are without doubt very well trained in their respective fi elds but when they come together something very special happens. Their repertoire consists of classical and crossover numbers that merge with light jazz and pop.

THE FORUM, TUNBRIDGE WELLS, 15TH FEBRUARY If you are into the classic rock sound then I strongly suggest that you give this band a try as they are breaking a residency from their Leeds venue to complete this UK tour. Formed in Castleford, West Yorkshire in 2012, they have an almost 1970s psychedelic sound to them. Originally called Allusondrugs, the band’s rebirth occurred in 2016 when they switched to their current name. I have a feeling they may just grow into something…Just a hunch of mine, but who knows? • Call The Forum on 0871 277 7101.
