Charles Walter Frank Hitchings was born in Brighton, Sussex, on 27 September 1915, and attested for the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve on 29 January 1940. He served during the Second World War on full-time service from 25 June 1940 to 29 November 1945, in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany as a Gunner with 2713 Squadron, Royal Air Force Regiment, and was released on 20 February 1946.
Sold with the recipient’s Royal Air Force Service and Release Book; Attestation Paper; Leave Pass; Royal Air Forces Association Membership card; and R.A.F. Regiment cloth insignia.

Pair: Gunner R. E. Porter, Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery, who was killed in action when the S.S. Port Hunter was torpedoed by the German Submarine U-582 and sank 370 miles off Madeira, 11 June 1942

Reginald Freeman Porter was born in Parkstone in 1914 and served during the Second World War in the 7/4 Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery. Employed as a D.E.M.S. Gunner in the S.S. Port Hunter, he was killed in action when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-582 in the Atlantic Ocean 370 miles west south west of Madeira. At the time she was part of Convoy OS-33, en route from Liverpool to Auckland via Durban, with a cargo of ammunition and depth charges. Of her compliment of 91, there were only 3 survivors. Porter is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
Note: Porter would also have been entitled to the Atlantic Star; however, the named Army Council enclosure slip states the number of medals issued as ‘2’.

Patrick Molesworth Minchin, born 27 August 1920; educated at Charterhouse and Merton College Oxford; Lieutenant, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, attached 15/7 Rajput Regiment; Captain, 9/7 Rajputs. He was afterwards a farmer and member of the Scottish Veteran Harriers Club and competed in World Masters Track and Field championships, Toronto 1974 and Gothenburg 1977. Sold with Army Medal Office letter, dated 15 January 1964, confirming award of medals but not entitled to 1939-45 Star, and a post card photograph of the recipient in uniform.

George Frederick William Habbishaw, a native of Coventry, was born in 1911 and served during the Second World War in 399 Battery, 59 Searchlight Regiment, Royal Artillery. He was one of two men killed/died of wounds when his searchlight sight at Lyndon End, Coventry, was bombed during a minor German attack on the city; a further three men were wounded. Habbishaw is buried under a C.W.G.C. headstone in Coventry (London Road) Cemetery.
