Henry Mann was born in Cheshire in 1889 and attested for the Liverpool Regiment, serving as a Sergeant during the Great War on the Western Front from 7 November 1915. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Machine Gun Corps on 25 May 1917, and was promoted Lieutenant on 26 November 1918.


John Christian Wilding attested for the Liverpool Regiment at Bootle, Lancashire, and served with the 6th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front. He was killed in action on 12 September 1918, and is buried in Moeuvres Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

John William Atkinson was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, in 1887 and attested for the West Yorkshire Regiment at Bradford on 16 September 1914. He served with the 6th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 16 April 1915, and was wounded during the Battle of the Somme (Leeds Mercury, 24 August 1916 refers). He was promoted Corporal on 10 December 1918, and was demobilised on 19 March 1919.

William Marley attested for the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 9 June 1915. He was discharged to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 8 February 1919. Sold with copied Medal Index Card.

William Smith attested for the Leicestershire Regiment on 5 September 1914, and served with the 9th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 29 July 1915. He was wounded in June 1918, being discharged on account of wounds on 22 January 1919, and was awarded a Silver War Badge.

Edward George Thomas Starkey was born in Carlton Ashby, Leicestershire, in 1895 and attested for the Leicestershire Regiment at Ashby de la Zouche on 15 August 1914. He served with the 6th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 29 July 1915, and suffered malaria, shell shock, and was wounded in action on 14 March 1917, suffering a gun shot wound to the right elbow that caused a compound fracture. He transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 21 March 1919.

Norman Lee Oddy served as a Second Lieutenant with the Lancashire Fusiliers during the Great War on the Western Front from 29 January 1915. He was promoted temporary Lieutenant on 1 February 1916, and subsequently served as Captain and Adjutant of the 11th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment.


Several men with the name James France appear on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Roll of Honour.


Richard Dawson was born in Hanley, Staffordshire, and attested for the Lancashire Fusiliers at Tunstall, Staffordshire. He served with the 18th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, was awarded the Military Medal (London Gazette 12 December 1917), and was killed in action on 22 October 1917. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


Ben Cook attested for the York and Lancaster Regiment at Sheffield, Yorkshire, and served with the 2nd/5th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front. He was killed in action on 3 May 1917, and having no known grave is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.


Joseph Baker attested for the Lancashire Fusiliers at Winsford, Cheshire, and served with the 2nd/6th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front. He was killed in action on 11 July 1917, and is buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.
