John Finlayson was born in Back, near Stornoway, in the Outer Hebrides, in 1862 and attested for the 59th Brigade at Glasgow on 22 May 1880, having previously served in the Highland Rifles. Appointed Piper on 11 January 1881, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, on 1 July of that year, and served with the Regiment in Egypt from 8 August to 31 October 1882, where he was present at the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir. He subsequently served in India from 1 October 1884 to 28 April 1885, before being discharged medically unfit on 9 June 1885, after 5 years and 19 days’ service.

Alfred John Willcox was born at Seasalter, Kent, on 30 August 1866, and joined the Navy on 27 September 1881, as a Boy 2nd class in Boscowen. He joined Rambler on 11 November 1884 as an Ordinary Seaman, and then from February 1886 as an Able Seaman, and remained in Rambler until 31 January 1889, having seen service off Suakin from February to March 1885 during the Sudan campaign. His subsequent service saw him advanced to Acting Chief Petty Officer in October 1907, before he was pensioned on 20 October 1909 and recommended for the Royal Fleet Reserve. He rejoined on 2 August 1914 and was demobilised after the war on 20 October 1919, with 38 years service. He was apparently not awarded a L.S. & G.C. medal which may have resulted from two periods of low character, ‘Fair in 1892, and ‘Good’ in 1902.

John Clark was born in Dalziel, near Motherwell, Lanarkshire, in 1861, and attested for the Scots Guards at Glasgow on 18 March 1880. He served with the Regiment in Egypt from 30 July to 13 November 1882, and was appointed a Piper on 13 September 1884. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 18 March 1886, and was discharged on 17 March 1892, after 12 years’ service.
