Sidney John Palmer was born in Payhembury, near Honiton, Devon, in 1894, and attested for the Devonshire Regiment on 9 December 1915. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from June 1916, before transferring to the Labour Corps in April 1917. He was promoted Corporal on 14 May 1917, and temporary Sergeant on 20 June 1919, before being demobilised on 11 October 1919. He joined the Devon Special Constabulary in 1929, and was employed thus during the Second World War- it is probable therefore that he witnessed the aftermath of the bombing of Exeter in April 1942. Subsequently, for his services in the Devon Constabulary, he was awarded the 1953 Coronation Medal.


Sold with three National Rifle Association Medals, one dated ‘1950’, the others unnamed; a British Legion lapel badge; a portrait photograph of the recipient; and copied service papers and other research.

Albert James Fairfield was born in Derby and attested for the North Staffordshire Regiment at Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Transferring to the West Yorkshire Regiment, he served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front. Advanced Acting Sergeant, he was killed in action on 29 June 1918; he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, France.


Jack Desmond Hinton was born in Thornton Heath, Surrey, and attested for the Huntingdonshire Cyclist Corps. Transferring to the West Yorkshire Regiment, he served during the Great War with the 1st/5th Battalion on the Western Front, and was killed in action on 25 April 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Francis Edgar Lingeman was born in France on 16 October 1895, and was educated at Tonbridge School. Following the outbreak of the Great War he joined the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps on 12 October 1914, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in Lancashire Fusiliers on 8 April 1915. He served with the 18th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers during the Great War on the Western Front from 29 January 1916, and was promoted temporary Lieutenant in June 1916. He was slightly wounded and gassed, near Houthulst Forest, on 18 October 1917. For his services during the Great War he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 18 December 1917) and awarded the French Croix de Guerre (London Gazette 15 December 1919). Emigrating to Canada, he died in Quebec on 3 April 1961.

Newton Dukinfield Thompson was born at Wrexham on 20 March 1886, was educated at Uppingham, and became an architect and surveyor in the Bury area of Lancashire. He volunteered for service in September 1914 and served in France with the 3/5th Lancashire Fusiliers from 28 February 1917, and, from 18 February 1918, with the 19th Lancashire Fusiliers, after the former battalion was disbanded. After the war he continued his professing and was resident at Reading, Berkshire. Sold with copied m.i.c. and service papers.
