Young Leaders Volunteer Opportunities
ASA Young Volunteers Programme
This is the 6th Year of the ASA Young Volunteer Programme which is open to members of any Swim21 Aquatics Club.
Young Ambassador Day
On the 16 October students from Stonehenge, Wellington Academy and Avon Valley College attended the Young Ambassador Day. The day was aimed to improve the students’ knowledge of leadership and the different roles that they can undertake. The day started with the students teaching each other warm up games, then creating a fundamental circuit, followed by teaching each other different activities like cheerleading and skipping. With all these new ideas
the students then created their own games and taught them to the rest of the group.
After lunch was a theory session focusing on the qualities needed to be a sports leader and for the students to start thinking what difference they are going to make back at school. If you want to learn more about becoming a Young Volunteer leader please contact your School Games Organiser.
School Games Leadership Training Day
On 4 April Sheldon School hosted the Leadership Training Day for the Sports Leaders who will be volunteering at the Wiltshire School Games on 2 July at Marlborough College.
Over 100 young leaders from Sheldon, Abbeyfield, Corsham, Malmesbury (Mid Wilts) St Augustine’s, St Laurence, Clarendon, (West Wilts) and St Edmunds (Salisbury) attended. We were joined by Rose Mc Grandle who shared her inspirational journey of being selected for Bob Skeleton through the Girls for Gold initiative. Rose has gone on to represent GB in the 2012 World Championships.
The morning consisted of sessions on Team-Building, Working with disabled athletes and The Values of the Games. After lunch the leaders were given sport specific training in the sports they will be supporting on 2 July.
The feedback from the tutors was that they are a very capable group and the School Games are in safe

hands. A big thank you goes to all who were involved in the training of our young leaders, the schools for encouraging the leaders to attend and the leaders themselves for putting themselves forward to be volunteers.
We are grateful for the support and commitment shown by all involved.
During this time over 150 young people aged 15-19 years have had the opportunity to assist with activities within a swim21 club environment and gain an insight into the role and structure and management of a voluntary sports club. They have attended courses on Team Management, Timekeeping and achieved the Young Aquatics Organiser award. Many have gone on to gain coaching /teaching qualifications. In some cases completion of the programme has been used as evidence for the Duke Of Edinburgh award and GCSE PE.
There are 42 Young Volunteers on the current programme, most of whom have completed in excess of 25 hours volunteering for their club and are busy organising an aquatics event to complete their award.
The majority will be helping at the swimming events at the Wiltshire and Swindon School Games on 27 June or 2 July.
The next programme will be starting in September 2014. Please contact Alma Borthwick on
