WELCOME to the second edition of RELAY magazine
It has been a very successful year for the Sainsbury’s School Games throughout England. In March 2013 the number of schools registered for School Games was 12,945 and by March 2014 this number had increased by 32% to 17,049. Also, the number of schools having achieved the Kite Mark has risen from 261 in 2013 to a predicted 674 in 2014.
At Level 3, the last year has seen almost 130,000 young people participating , with 52% of these participants being girls.
School Games Level 2 Festivals
Orienteering festival
On 28 February the key stage 1 and Yr 3/4 Orienteering festival took place at Avon Valley College. The pupils had to complete the following challenges: crack the code, sums, symbols, opposites, netball court map and a cone map. Pupils worked in pairs trying to find the right flag or cone on the map.
Year 10 BTEC and PE students from Avon Valley College officiated at the festival by handing out the maps or marking the answer sheets, they all did a fantastic job.
In total 100 pupils took part in the event and had a great time despite the poor weather.
The winners for the Yr 3/4 age group were Larkhill with the top pair Lucas Grigor-Ramsey and Jamie Sanders on
2 Wiltshire and Swindon Relay
96 points and runners up were Sophie Mattingley and Bethany Marr on 95 points.
The Winners for Key Stage 1 age group were Durrington infants with the top pair Charlie Harries and Jake Harris on 33 points and second Faith Berry and Freddie Harris 31 points.
It is really pleasing to see that these participation increases are matched in Wiltshire & Swindon and that more young people, volunteers, schools and supporting organisations are involved in and inspired by the Sainsbury’s School Games.

‘Spirit of the Games’
The Sainsbury’s School Games is about creating a positive and rewarding experience for all, and bringing together sport, culture and education. Competition creates the ideal context in which to explore personal values and conduct, as through it we learn how to handle victory and defeat, how to put ourselves to the test and how to respect our opponents and work with our team mates to achieve success.
The ‘Spirit of the Games’ is about the values the Sainsbury’s School Games should instil in young people through Sport and Competition and the way in which we communicate these values and involve young people in championing this cause will help to bring the ‘Spirit of the Games’ to life.
The ‘Spirit of the School Games’ were developed by young people and these are the six values they have identified as being most important to them in sport:
Determination Honesty Passion Respect
Self belief Teamwork
Certificates were presented to the Schools who had shown they were following the School Games Values throughout the Tag Rugby competition.
