Tips for a healthier digestion

If you have digestive symptoms from time to time, here’s a quick guide to a few things that may help.

Use over-the-counter laxatives If your digestive system is sluggish, laxatives can help – don’t just use them when your symptoms are severe.

Take medicines early There’s no need to wait until your symptoms start before you treat them. If you know you’re going to get stomach cramps after a big meal or you tend to have diarrhoea in certain circumstances, take your medication beforehand.

Lose weight If you’re overweight or obese, it can have an effect on the way your bowel works, making food pass through your digestive system too quickly and causing diarrhoea.

Ask your local pharmacist about over- the-counter digestive remedies. Find your nearest Careway pharmacy at www.careway.co.uk.

chicken Roast

3. Remove the chicken pieces from the pan and place in an ovenproof casserole dish. 4. Sprinkle with thyme, salt, pepper and garlic. Pour the wine over the chicken and drizzle with olive oil. 5. Roast, covered, for 25 minutes before adding the pomegranate seeds and cooking for 5 more minutes. 6. When the chicken is cooked all the way through (the juices should run clear when the chicken is pierced with a skewer), remove from the oven. 7. Add the spinach and replace the lid for a few minutes until the spinach wilts. There should be a sauce at the bottom of the pan to pour over the chicken. 8. Serve with brown or black rice.

The truth about your sweet tooth

Can’t stop craving sweet foods? It’s not your fault, say experts Dr Jen Nash and nutritionist Fiona Hunter. Talking to the Daily Mail, they explain

that we’re all born with a preference for sweet foods. Foods that contain sugar, they suggest, provided energy for our ancestors’ survival when food was scarce. If you were given sweets when you

were a child, it could make you want them as an adult too, especially if you had sweet foods as a reward or to make you feel better, as it means you may associate them with feelings of happiness. Next time you crave something

sweet, try having some fresh or dried fruit instead of sweets or chocolate, the experts suggest.
