the world-famous Rockingham Pottery wares from just up the road in Swinton. One of the best Rockingham collections anywhere in the world, it includes a full dinner service, tea and dessert wares along with the striking 1.15m high 1826 Rhinocerous Vase – one of only two of its kind ever made.

And we can’t forget one very old gentleman who will be looking forward to having a roaring great time for the next 125 years. Nelson, the museum’s resident Cape Lion, has been a mainstay feature of Clifton Park since 1946. He’s even got his own Lion’s Den play area which was

created at the front of the museum in the late 90s.

Before he made his home in Rotherham, South African Nelson lived at London Zoo from 1859 until his death in 1872 when he was then stuffed by famous taxidermist Rowland Ward. Now extinct, he is a fascinating reminder of the Cape Lion and has been loved by many a visitor over the last 70 years.

With lots of exciting activities planned over the holidays, see their website for more birthday news and events. www.cliftonpark.org.uk

Rotherham foster families come in all

shapes and

At Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council we have all kinds of families who foster, including Scott and Toni Barstow and their three children, Chloe 14, Alex 12 and Sophie 10. Scott 42, and Toni 39, began fostering five years

ago, since then they have cared for 14 children including a four-year-old girl and six-year-old boy who are currently placed with them.

Here they tell us why they think fostering is one of the best decisions they have ever made:

TONI: “Our children knew from day one that we were looking to foster and were so excited they

One of the most common worries parents have about becoming a fostering family is what effect it will have on their own children.

thought once we had started the process a child would come to us straight away.” SCOTT: “One of our main concerns was how fostering would affect our family, but the children really got involved and we all went on this journey together.” TONI: “We described fostering as some mummies and daddies might be poorly or don’t look after their children, so they need our help.” SCOTT: “When we had our first child like every parent we soon realised what big difference it made to our lives. However by the time our third child came along it made no difference and the same can be said now we are fostering with an even busier household.”

TONI: “Our children have become much more aware of issues other families are facing and because they now have a bigger understanding their own lives are richer for it. Chloe wants to be a teacher, Alex wants to adopt a child and Sophie says she wants to be a social worker or a foster carer.” SCOTT:“Any doubts and questions in your mind will be answered, so if it’s right for you and your family you will just know.” TONI:“I get quite a lot of people asking me about fostering and I just say go for it, I think it’s fantastic.”
