OUT & ABOUT

Barnsley’s

Well, shiver me timbers, young shipmates! There’s even more to explore down at Barnsley Metrodome this summer as the nautical adventure at Calypso Cove Waterpark goes up another knot.

After sailing the seven seas in search of somewhere for mini mermaids and baby buccaneers to splash around in, Calypso Cove’s resident pirate, Captain Cutlass, has finally found where X marks the perfect spot.

Anchoring his ship down on the infamous Coconut Creek, his crew have hijacked the old splash zone and have been overhauling it for the last few months.

Creating a new parent and toddler area for children under eight, Cutlass’ crew have been heave ho-ing and battening down the hatches to make a safe oasis for younger swimmers. Renamed Barnacle Bay, the existing pool

has been made shallower and will now be an interactive play area with jet sprays and sprinklers, bucket tippers and water wheels, a small slide plus a treasure map wall around the Bay. Following a VIP launch on Friday 20th July, Barnacle Bay will be fully open for toddlers and younger children to have a barrel of laughs in. For the bigger scallywags and the old sea dogs, Calypso Cove is still the place to have lots of swashbuckling fun at as they take on the treasure trove of slides and rides. Darker than Davy Jones’ locker, the Terror Torrent is one of the UK’s fastest indoor flumes

that is sure to shake those skull and cross bones. Plucky pirates can follow it up with a trip into the volcano’s belly down Eruption – but ye be warned, it’s not for the lily livered scoundrels amongst us.

On calmer waters does the Kraken sit, with a family friendly flume that won’t give you the Jolly Rogers.

Thar she blows! All aboard the Sunken Galleon pirate ship as it sets sail for new horizons. Slip and slide into the shallower end, race your fellow brigands to the bottom of the four-lane Splash Ahoy, or fire water cannons at those yellow-bellied sea monsters.

And are you brave enough to walk the plank? After all the splashing, head on over to the ten-pin bowling alley where excitement strikes and the competition begins. Choose your lucky ball and guard it close as you battle it out to be Kingpin of the family for the day and take home that bowling crown. Pssst, don’t let Dad win. The award-winning lanes boast disco lights and arcade games for an all-American game of fun that won’t leave you in the gutter.

Why not combine the two activities, with a family Swim & Bowl pass for just £34.99 for a family of four. Even Jack Sparrow wouldn’t grumble at that.
