Senior Living Flying solo for the first time
Death and divorce can result in one unintended consequence - what to do for holidays. Here, were offer a guide to the upsides and the pitfalls…
…take your time, find a local travel agent or consultant
Every couple loves to take a break from the humdrum mundanity of life and go off on holiday – especially in retirement when time is one’s own. A partner can share the preparations and planning, the sense of anticipation beforehand and companionship while away. Whether through bereavement or divorce, there is now a growing band of senior singletons who must pack a suitcase for one and take that plunge alone. What the single traveller decides to do is predicated by inclination, finance and personal interests. One can opt for safety in numbers as there are countless group tours available for the over 50s. Experts in the field say that it takes courage to holiday completely alone, especially abroad. Te average age of the solo traveller – and there are estimated to be millions of them across the globe – is said to be 57. One can get in the mood for a trip overseas by testing the water closer to home – days out, short breaks or holidays to places previously unvisited. Many of the holiday companies are adept at geting the balance right
for seniors and fall into three main categories – the truly solo traveller, those on their own with no single supplements and small-group tours popular with singles. Tose who are brave enough to throw a few T shirts in rucksack and book flights without thinking too hard about accommodation probably don’t need advice, says Sharron Livingston the editor of the award- winning Travel Magazine.
“But people who find themselves alone for whatever reason are going to need some advice and guidance, so take your time, find a local travel agent or consultant get something that’s right for you,” says Sharron.
Ten reasons for going it alone 1. Eat and drink what you like 2. Make your own plans and do what you want to
3. Change plans at the last minute without checking with anyone
4. Make your own mistakes – if you get lost, it’s up to you to find a way back
5. Spend as little or as long in markets and shops
6. Getting to know the adventurous side of your nature
7. Fall into the company of strangers
8. Get up as late as you like 9. No arguments 10. Faffing about as much as you please
