Pub Awards Pubs honoured at brewery’s annual awards
PUBLICANS had their moment in the sun when the winners of the Shepherd Neame awards were announced – and pubs in the heart of Kent were among those recognised…
T
he annual awards were held in Ashford in June, and among the winners was
Sarah Pemble, who was recognised for 60 years of service at the Pepper Box Inn in Ulcombe, near Maidstone.
Mrs Pemble moved to the pub as a toddler when her parents Jack and Bety Wood took over in 1958, and although she moved away for a while, she and husband Jeff took over the premises in 1984.
Tey remain there to this day, with daughter Sophie now sharing the tenancy.
Sarah said: “Our pub is the epitome of a family business, and we are delighted to have our work recognised with this award. Many things have changed throughout the past six decades, but our approach to running the Pepper Box hasn’t. “We have loved our time here and are proud to say that it has remained a traditional country pub, without any gimmicks and without music or football, offering a warm welcome, great drinks and great food.”
Another local winner was Te Farmhouse, which won the prize for food pub of the year. Based in West Malling High Street, the pub serves an extensive menu of pub classics with a contemporary twist – and local ingredients are at the heart of its recipes. Fish comes from Hawkhurst, vegetables from Boughton Monchelsea and fruit from Linton and Loose. Te licensee is Martial Chaussey, who is also
the man behind Elite Pubs, with premises like Te Dirty Habit in Hollingbourne, Te Poting Shed in Langley and the newly-opened Te Herbalist in Maidstone town centre (see Food for Tought, Page 35) also in his portfolio – and a reputation for high quality food at them all. At Te Farmhouse, there is a popular steak night on Tuesdays and lobster night is on Friday, while there is also an outdoor pizza shack, and judges praised the team for their “dedication to creating a memorable experience for customers, striving for fantastic food and fantastic service”. Other winners on the night included the
Royal Oak in New Ash Green, which was named as “turnaround pub” of the year, while the popular Old Neptune on the beach at Whitstable was tenanted pub of the year. Another Whitstable pub was honoured too as a lifetime achievement award was given to Gordon Cooper and Jenny Dale on their retirement at the Coach and Horses.
