powder, not helped by the hens taking dust baths in it. Still, there are worse dilemmas to face!
In late spring, we welcomed two of new chickens to the coop to
replace a couple of dearly departed. We said goodbye to Angie and Miranda and welcomed Sam and Molly. Tey’re both ex-free rangers from Spout Farm, near Leeds. Te entire stock of ex-layers are offloaded each spring to local people who are prepared to give these workers a pleasant retirement and still get regular eggs.
It is a pleasure to see them happy alongside, if a litle bossy towards, their new bantam friends. Te farmer has just cut the field at the back of our house for hay, a bumper dividend this year aſter a wet spring.

t’s high summer and no one can complain that we haven’t had a pretty good one, by Kentish standards, weather-wise.
As I write, as July fast approaches, there
has been little or no rain for weeks. The soil in the vegetable plot in the garden – particularly where the early potatoes have been lifted – has been turned to a virtual
Walmer Castle. Te Lord Warden post is one of the highest ceremonial roles in the land, previously held by the Duke of Wellington, Sir Winston Churchill and the Queen Mother.
