Swimming Pool Scene SCHOOL POOLS

Bethany School in Kent in 2016. Set in the stunning Kent Weald countryside, Bethany is a co- educational school for pupils aged 11 to 18. Fowler Swimming Pools delivered the brief of a high quality indoor 25m x 11.6m deck level, fully tiled pool with depths of 1m to 1.8m. Set within a Norwegian Log Buildings complex, the projects secured planning permission in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Fowler identified and specified Certikin for the complete pool equipment fit, which included filters, pumps, flow control fittings, pipework, Delta 14 AHU environmental control unit, Certikin DU4 commercial UV and automatic chemical dosing. Headmaster, Francie Healy says: “We are delighted with our six lane 25m swimming pool; it is a first-class facility and has certainly raised sporting aspirations at Bethany.

“They did a superb job in very difficult circumstances and we are thrilled with it. The pool has widened our sporting profile, allowing swimming to be part of our sports programme all year round; we are now hosting swimming galas and meets with other schools and the pool is also used as part of the PE curriculum for all year groups, teaching lifesaving and fitness training within the Sports Scholarship programme.” Kennet Pool is a 25m pool on the site of Kennet School, a co- educational academy in Thatcham, West Berkshire. The pool, which includes a flume, is within a dual-use leisure centre that also houses a sports hall and 36-station gym. Investment in the plant facilities over the last few years, has further enhanced the pool’s reputation and service. Kennet School uses the pool for 12 hours per week. In addition, local primary schools are allocated five hours of pool time per week during term time. These sessions, which are delivered by the pool’s teaching team, fit around the busy core public activity timetable and use by local groups.

The pool programme is extremely full and varied and is designed to appeal to all ages within the surrounding community. It includes swimming lessons, fitness classes, lane and general swims as well as fun sessions.

An Aquazone swimming lesson programme, which operates in line with the ASA’s national plan for teaching swimming, runs all year round for more than 17 hours per week. The venue has seen a steady 7% increase in use of its Aqua Fit sessions including Aqua Zumba for more active members. The pool also offers ladies-only swimming, seniors-only swimming and adults-only swimming.

Fun swims maximise pool space and due to popular demand, the flume runs every Friday and weekend with additional sessions throughout school holiday periods.

With Newbury District Swimming Club also based at the pool, latest figures show a 17% annual increase in the numbers of casual swimmers from 30,053 to 35,147 annually. ■
