An Evening with Jordan Matt
THE 2017 WALKER CUP MATCH WAS A SOURCE OF GREAT PRIDE TO ROYAL LIVERPOOL DUE TO THE PRESENCE IN THE GB&I TEAM OF OUR VERY OWN MATT JORDAN. NOT LONG AFTER HIS RETURN FROM LOS ANGELES HE DESCRIBED HOW HE MADE IT THERE DURING QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS CHAIRED BY MARK GORTON.
What are your earliest memories of golf? How did you get started? I started playing as soon as I could walk really. I’d have plastic clubs that I’d use in and around the house. I joined Hoylake at the earliest possible age when I was 7, and got my handicap down to 18 when I was 9 so that’s when I was able to play in the men’s competitions. Obviously my dad was a big influence in getting me started. (Matt’s father, Andy, is a fine player who has won the

Royal Liverpool Club Championship on four occasions.)
How important was family in the development of your game? Very. Admittedly I did struggle when I was younger to listen to my dad and Grandad as I always thought they were telling me how to get worse in a way. But as I matured I knew they just want me to do as well as possible and that it was worth listening to what they had to say.

It’s great to have family involved as I can speak to them whenever and chat about anything on my mind. We can be brutally honest with each other as all they want is me to succeed and that won’t happen unless people really say what they think.
You were clearly a golfer of enormous promise, but you were also at school
