the clock The Royal Liverpool clubhouse boasts a double sided clock erected to commemorate the extraordinary record of success of John Ball Jr, the Amateur Champion of 1888, 1890, 1892, 1894 and 1899; and the Open Champion of 1890. Whilst most of today’s top players carry


at least three wedges with different lofts we still watch in admiration as they endlessly get themselves out of trouble with marvellous pitch shots. I make no claims that this year’s Top Tips will make you into an Amateur or Open champion, but I can show you how using the mental image of a clock face will help to deliver a wide range of distances and trajectories, and in turn improve your short game.

Using your left arm, simply get the feel of moving to 8 o’clock - and then use your right arm to swing through to 4 o’clock.
