Welcome A MESSAGE FROM THE CAPTAINS

A VERY WARM WELCOME to the latest edition of Royal Liverpool Golf Club’s annual magazine. Even though it won’t be competed

for until September 2019, we’ve proudly placed the Walker Cup on the cover. Why? Because the Club is very

much looking forward to hosting the Match, which will take place during our 150th anniversary celebrations, and also because it’s 35 years since the USA and GB&I last did battle for the Cup on the Hoylake links. On these pages you can enjoy memories

of 1983 shared by RLGC members who were there, as well as an interview with Nathaniel Crosby - who was not only a member of the USA team, but will also be its Captain in 2019. We’ve more Walker Cup reflections

from Royal Liverpool’s Matt Jordan, a member of the GB&I 2017 team, and Top Tips from our Head Professional and Captain of the PGA, John Heggarty, The excellent sports journalist, Peter

Dixon, writes about the visit to Hoylake of the Association of Golf Writers, and we continue to tell The History of Hoylake in 100 Objects. If you visit Royal Liverpool we do hope you’ll have time to enjoy the best collection of golfing memorabilia outside St Andrews. As incoming Captains for the year to

come, we are enormously excited about the prospect. Wherever we travel and whatever the company, golfers know and admire our Club and wonderful links course.

Our roles bring responsibilities, but

we have been overwhelmed already by the support and offers of help. Whether it is the Starters, Jimmy and Neil, the front of house team led by Shaun and John, the professional shop or the back office, they all work tirelessly to keep the Club running smoothly. The

course continues to see

improvements under the guidance of the Greens Committee and our head greenkeeper, Craig, but it all happens smoothly, almost imperceptibly, while we continue to enjoy playing the links. The

ground floor bar area of

the clubhouse has been completely refurbished, so let’s hope the year will bring us the weather to enjoy a drink on the

new piazza overlooking our

challenging first hole. In September the Ladies will be

hosting the Women’s International Team Challenge, and we both look forward to greeting the competitors from nine other leading clubs in Britain and North America. We too have been privileged to play

in other countries and meet locals who have visited Hoylake. The overwhelming feedback is that they were made to feel genuinely welcome. Royal Liverpool is rightly proud of its important heritage, but it is

also

a forward looking Club that intends to make sure our warm welcome is extended throughout 2018, to the Walker Cup and the 150th celebrations of 2019, and beyond. n
