the Club’s rich heritage, but also for the warmth of our welcome and hospitality. As Bernard Darwin observed, Hoylake belongs primarily to its members, but also to the world of golf, and it is always a pleasure to share this special place with others who love the game. During the year I was therefore very
fortunate to be invited to attend many golf days including the Company Day, on which I was able to thank our sponsors for their generous support of this magazine; and dinners, including that of the Hittite golfing society whose members play golf to a very high standard and socialise to an even higher one.
TRIPS ABROAD Golfing
trips abroad are often the
highlight of any Captain’s year and mine was no exception with a wonderful visit in early summer to the Atlanta Athletic Club for the Arnold Palmer Trophy. The AAC is a great place and, as the home Club of Bobby Jones, has a long and very special connection with Hoylake. The welcome and southern hospitality were fabulous, enriched by the presence of many familiar Atlanta friends who are also overseas members here at Hoylake. A round at Peachtree, a course rated
by many as the finest inland course in America, was the perfect ending to a lovely week in Georgia. Late summer took me and my wife and a strong supporting cast of Hoylake
members and partners back across the pond to watch the Walker Cup at the Los Angeles Country Club, and, in particular, to support Hoylake member Matthew Jordan represent GB and Ireland. Before arriving in Hollywood we went
first to San Francisco for a truly magical few days
with matches against the
California Club, and a particularly great day and dinner at
the San Francisco
Golf Club - founded in 1885 by two members from Hoylake. We recognized that fact by presenting the membership of SFGC with a specially commissioned founders quaich. I felt nothing could beat that day but
it was a close run thing as next up was a chance to play the legendary Cypress Point. It was golfing and visual perfection and, although my game was not at its best, my tee shot across the Pacific Ocean at the 16th hole will remain an enduring golfing highlight for the rest of my life. The whole Walker Cup experience was fabulous with
of new Captain, Sir Ian Gilmore, and Brenda Cross, Captain of the Ladies. I wish to thank all staff and members for their support during an extraordinary year, and to the past Captains for entrusting me with such an honour and responsibility. Finally, infinite thanks to my wife, Janet, who has been so supportive in letting me fulfill this lifetime dream. n
Matthew playing
well against a very strong USA team. The touring support he received from Hoylake members - and especially from his friends from the colts - has become the stuff of legend. We are all looking forward with eager anticipation to 2019 when we host this wonderful competition and will be determined to show off the best of Hoylake once again to the watching golfing world.
