THE UNIVERSITY OF

LIVERPOOL GOLF CLUB WAS FOUNDED IN 1924 AND PLAYED MANY

COURSES IN MERSEYSIDE FOR 40 YEARS UNTIL A MATCH AGAINST

MANCHESTER AT ROYAL LIVERPOOL RESULTED IN HOYLAKE BECOMING ITS PERMANENT HOME.

IN 2008 AN ALUMNI GOLF DAY was added to the calendar, an event that has gone from strength to strength ever since, and 2017’s day of competition and camaraderie maintained the trend, as Stuart Wade reports.

I have taken inspiration for this report

from an historical figure. Lately I have become interested in Rome around the time of Julius Caesar and came across Marcus Tullius Cicero. A politician and lawyer of noble origins, Cicero was the greatest orator of his time. Given he was murdered in 43BC he is sadly not available to speak at a future dinner, but it is he who can guide us through this year’s Alumni Golf Day via his aphorisms and innate understanding of human nature. A record number of 79 golfers travelled

in hope both in advance and on the day to this increasingly popular event. A record number of students (18) passed up revision opportunities to show the former students that golf remains healthy at the home of trophies - aka University of Liverpool Golf Club. In 2008 our first event attracted 44

golfers. Progress has been consistent since then, whilst the course has consistently and progressively challenged those who have taken it on. The higher we are placed

the more

humbly we should walk. The 2017 event was played out on

a dry day with a light breeze overlaid with unthreatening clouds. Players were greeted warmly at registration by Lily and Sarah from our Alumni team. Play was, for many, rather pedestrian, but 13 of our alumni shot scores in the 70s. This is three more than last year but five below the record number of 18 in 2011. The scratch trophy will have another student name on it as sports scholar and plus 2 golfer Louis Birchall’s 74 repelled the

charge of experienced duo Paul Williams (mid 1980s) and Tom Woodhouse (early 2000s). Student Sam O’Brien and 2016 winner, Bob Sluming (mid 2000s), took the remaining individual prizes with a brace of 76s. The team scratch event turned out to be a scrap between 1st team captain Chris Hurrell’s team and club President Johnno Howell’s team. Both returned 6 under totals of 138 with Chris’s team prevailing on countback. When you are aspiring to the highest

place, it is honourable to reach the second or even the third rank. The yellow tee Stableford event

attracted more participants this year with the University staff entering two teams and more players from yesteryear taking part. The individual was won emphatically by Gary Coughlan whose gross 79 and 44 points were too many for all others. RLGC Captain, Dr Bruce Taylor, led his team with aplomb coming second with 35 points. Retired dentist, Mike Furness, came in third with 32 points much to his delight and surprise.
