The Shorts Stuff

Series one of the blockbusting Netflix series, The Crown, pulled no punches when dealing with the dubious career of King Edward VIII. Having abdicated in December 1936 after less than a year on the throne in order to marry Mrs Wallis Simpson, Peter Morgan’s script laid bare Edward’s subsequent dalliance with the Nazis whom, he hoped, might return him to what he regarded as his rightful place at the summit of Britain’s aristocracy. What The Crown failed to mention was the even greater scandal of 1929 when Edward,

then the Prince of Wales, was allowed to play the Hoylake links while dressed in shorts. Back then, attire such as this worn for golf was regarded as an abomination. Historians might well argue in his defence

that the Prince was dressed in this manner in order to attend the Scout Jamboree at nearby Arrowe Park in Birkenhead; however, it also seems possible that the deference shown to him by Royal Liverpool Golf Club contributed to his narcissistic outlook on life - and that history might have proved very different had he been instructed to wear long trousers along with everyone else.

Walker Cup

The Walker Cup 2019 to be staged at Hoylake boasts an attractive logo which has found its way onto clothing and accessories available for sale. Shirts, towels, tops, together

with items like bag tags, pitch mark repairers and ball markers are on offer in the Professional’s shop.

The Anglo Swedish

Exchange 2017

Whatever expectations the youngsters from Sweden had prior to their visit to the UK, I’m certain they were nowhere near as high as what they actually did experience at Royal Liverpool, Royal Birkdale and Caldy Golf Clubs. Beautiful golf courses, amazing clubhouses and, at

Hoylake, intimidating but wonderful bunkers. PGA Master Professional, John Heggarty, told us: “Think of them as water hazards. You don’t want to be in them.” Wise words, and the Swedish youngsters seemed to take note, which may have helped propel them to victory. This extremely well organised week, full of golf, food and

drink in the great company of our British hosts went by far too quickly. I’m sure that many life-long friendships will have been established amongst the youngsters, organisers and parents. Now that the Pinnington Pot is safely back in Sweden, we

look forward eagerly to your return for another shot at winning it back.
