aroused the most curiosity. You have to remember that all those years ago the Crosby name was much more firmly in people’s imaginations than it is now, even though Bing Crosby had passed away a few years earlier. The Road to… movies he made with Bob Hope were still popular on British television, so Nathaniel had something of the celebrity about him, especially to non-golfers. The upshot of which was that, when

Nathaniel and some of his team mates decided to seek refreshment one early evening in the Green Lodge pub on Stanley Road, word quickly got round that he was there, which meant that the pub soon got a lot busier than normal, and probably encouraged a few more locals to attend the Walker Cup than might have done otherwise.

PHIL REES ROBERTS My recollections inevitably focus on being a close observer of the part played by my father, John, the captain of Royal Liverpool Golf Club in 1983. The Walker Cup was treated as an

event with international star appeal in our home from the moment we learnt that Bing Crosby’s son, Nathaniel, would be attending a cocktail party ‘chez nous’

along with both teams and entourages the evening before the opening ceremony. My mother and I speculated recently if

Nate compared the views from our old, seafront house with those of Pebble Beach where he no doubt played in his father’s Classic Pro Am. Who knows, perhaps in 2019 we’ll be able to ask him when he returns to Hoylake to captain the USA team - though I dare say the matter won’t be near the top of his agenda. The opening ceremony was televised

and coverage including the performance of the splendid band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines; the presentation of the two teams; and speeches by USA captain Jay Sigel, GB&I captain Charlie Green and, of course, my Dad ‘JRR’, who announced that “he was proud to be welcoming all to his beloved Hoylake in sight of his native Wales.” Later he was presented with an official

BBC VHS cassette and, as I recall, was obliged to go out and purchase what was then a cutting edge, new fangled VHS player-recorder. In the weeks that followed, despite our attempts to play some recorded sport or movies, I don’t

think we had a look in - but at least I managed to learn by heart the entire Royal Marines routine, along with the art of “Welsh” public speaking. There are a some lovely photos of my

father and winning captain, Jay Sigel, the result it seems of JRR holding on tight to one handle of the Walker Cup in order to guarantee himself a regular place in the archives of amateur golf history. When it was all over, my friend

Arthur Byrne and I somehow ended up at the Bowler Hat Hotel in Oxton near Birkenhead where the GB&I team was staying. The entertaining Phil Walton, an absolute gentleman and later a successful Ryder Cup team member, regaled us with stories of his favourite Irish links courses and, much to the amusement of all, he stated he rated none above Malahide - in those days only a 9 hole course! It was a memorable night topping off a great few days, never to be forgotten. n
