Ladies Golf
CAPTAIN OF THE LADIES 2017- 18, HELEN HEGGARTY, LOOKS BACK AT HER YEAR IN OFFICE.
AS CAPTAIN OF THE LADIES it was an enormous pleasure to hear the news that Maureen Richmond kicked off our season in style by winning the Spanish Seniors Championship in March last year at Isla Canela. Since then Maureen - Mo to her friends - has progressed to the County Seniors side along with fellow Hoylake members Jeanne Bell, Amanda Ryan and Ali Grant. Freya Johnson and Emily McBurney
have been playing for the Cheshire Ladies team and competed in the English Girls Championship which was won by our Country member, Bel Wardle. Emily, along with Patrick Delaney and Matthew Walsh, represented the Club in the Junior Club Finals at Woodhall Spa, having won the Cheshire qualifier. Bel has since won
the Portuguese Ladies Championship. Meanwhile, back in Cheshire, Joyce
Tuomey and Ali Grant won the coveted Doris Chambers Trophy at Delamere Forest Golf Club, a knock-out foursomes competition for West Cheshire golfers. The teams fared well in inter county
competition - Royal Liverpool Ladies A team took the West Cheshire title, but sadly lost out to Tytherington in the County Final. At the other end of the playing spectrum,
the Club has run a wonderful Academy programme with the aim of recruiting partners and friends of members to the game and the Club. As a result, eight women have become members following the six month programme of tuition, practice and support on the links. Thanks
are due to Sue Ramsey, Jeanne Bell and my husband, Head Professional John Heggarty, for all their hard work in making this initiative come together. Thanks and praise also go to the many ladies who have acted as ‘mentors’ to the Academy players.
FUN DAYS OUT During my year we have enjoyed some fun games, including against the Skylarks and the Villagers, as well as the long standing Wirral Spoons match against Wirral Ladies. The Away Day trip to North Wales Golf Club proved popular with the ladies who enjoyed some fun golf on this beautiful links. The July weather was wonderful but sadly too good for the on course refreshment of ice-creams which had melted by the time later starters reached the halfway stage. In June I had the great pleasure of
representing the Club, along with Jeanne Bell, at the celebration of the 125th anniversary of Lahinch Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland. Clubs from all over the world took part and it was, as always, a treat to play this magnificent course and enjoy Lahinch’s
legendary
