Totnes
The arts and culture; history and tradition; contemporary and exciting; colourful and inclusive; innovative and inventive – all this and lots more in one friendly market town
Visit a town that’s full of charm and character
One of the most lively and vibrant towns in the South Hams but still retaining its ancient market town character; historic, mystic and contempo- rary, fun and forward- thinking, Totnes is the unique home of an independently minded community with shops and businesses as indi- vidual as their owners. Totnes Station also plays a big part in the town, where you can hop on to visit London one way or Cornwall the other, and when you return know that your friendly taxi driv- er will be on hand to take you home.
Or perhaps ask your driver to take you to the Dartington Estate (about five miles away) and enjoy a lovely walk back to Totnes on the leafy footpath.
Take in the views of the pretty river Dart that flows through Totnes

views on offer. You can explore a great deal more of the town’s ancient heritage as many early build- ings and structures still survive today. Take a stroll along Ramparts Walk; pass under the East Gate Arch, gate- way to the medieval town and painstaking- ly recreated in recent times following fire damage.
This is just a sample of what Totnes has to offer. Take time to explore, not only the main thoroughfare with its architecture across the ages, but also the side streets and alleyways where you will find some ‘hidden gems’.
However you choose to spend your time in Totnes, do make sure you allow at least a day to enjoy the delights of this town steeped in history while very much living in the moment. And with the tranquil river Dart running through it, when the tides are right you can have fun getting there by boat, or open-top bus when they are not. Or, travel in from Buckfastleigh aboard a steam train to enjoy the glorious south Devon country- side amid which Totnes sits.
