Sometimes it is the destination that matters, other times, the trip itself. With the Salcombe to South Sands Ferry you get the very best of both! A wonderful trip heading from the very centre of Salcombe town up through the estuary, seemingly out to the open sea, before the Ferry swings towards land and runs up to glorious golden sands – and the very best part of all, the Sea Tractor ride.


There is truly no better way to see the beautiful harbour at this prettiest of sailing towns than from the South Sands Ferry, with its bright colours and gay bunting flut- tering in the coastal breeze. It’s worth making the trip there and back for that alone.


Add in a fabulous beach at the end and you have a great family day out with watersports activities on hand for those seeking more excitement than buckets and spades.


From South Sands, you can make your way to the National Trust property at Overbeck’s, a sub-tropi- cal garden paradise with unique species around a house full of amazing collections. A delight for gardeners and a treasure trove of activities for families, especially the smaller members.


With fabulous far-reaching views to enjoy across wide open water from Bolt Head, it is a walkers’


haven, and after all that exercise you will find the relaxing trip back on the Ferry more than welcome. The Ferry service operates from Easter through to the end of October, with extended hours during the main summer season, offering the ideal way to ‘beat the crowds’, especially during Regatta weeks.


From morning to evening you can watch the Harvest Reaper mak- ing her way to and from the town and beach, and if you take the trip, you get the chance to make the transfer from boat to water via the Sea Tractor – a must for locals and visitors alike and all part of the fun to be had.


The Harvest Reaper is also avail- able for private bookings, perhaps for an evening pub visit or an elegant cocktail cruise.


Licensed for a maximum of 30 passengers, private parties of 20 are a comfortable number if you plan to provide your own nibbles and drinks. If organising a pub visit, it is advisable to book ahead as there is usually ‘shore leave’ of about one- and-a-half to two hours over high water. And the tide waits for nei- ther man nor boat!
