Watersports We have everything you need for all your water activities – what are you waiting for?
Glide, surf, explore, race, fitness: what’s all this fuss about surf skiing?
Having paddled many dif- ferent kayaks/canoes and pad- dle boards in the past, the feel- ing a surf ski gives you is cer- tainly exhilarating and I am totally converted.
The ability to sit on and go is great; the ability to surf ocean swell and waves is awesome; the speed and glide you get is second to none; the option of paddling rivers, estuaries, flat water and the open ocean is fantastic.
So for people who aren’t aware of what surf skis are, they are a form of kayaking but the sport very much has its own culture and following.
Some people explain it as a performance sit-on-top kayak, where you sit on the craft with foot straps that enable you to steer the craft with your feet with an under stern rudder, while paddling with a specific paddle called a wing paddle. Surf skis range from 14ft to 21ft, with varied widths to suit the paddlers ability. It’s fair to say that the scene is massive in
the southern hemisphere, with South Africa and Australia being at the forefront of the activity. There are two forms of surf ski – Spec skis and Ocean skis.
Surf ski was born from the surf life-saving clubs when life guards had developed prone rescue boards with twin-bladed paddles so they could reach people in trouble quicker. The boards very slowly evolved into surf skis, which today are widely used for adventure, fitness and competi- tive racing.
Plus the ease of handling, for kids and adults, of these superb lightweight crafts on and off the water is sublime, not to mention the benefits to your fitness and well being.
Come and feel the glide with Sea Kayak Salcombe, which is offering surf ski coaching, tours and rental this season. Come down and have a go and be apart of this hugely addictive sport.
