Diary of Events Activities and events for all ages, all interests, in and around our area August


3th-5th: Torbay Steam Fair, Brixham. One of the largest events in Torbay. The main theme for this year will be based on steam road haulage and an even larger working section.


4th: Woofstock, Coronation Park, Dartmouth: A festival by dogs for dogs. A family friendly day out.


4th: Loddiswell Horticultural Show. A celebration of commu- nity and village life, with enter- tainment, music, competitions, great food, lots of laughter and more. From noon.


4th: Lupton Holistic Festival, Lupton House, Brixham Road, Brixham.


5th: Celebrate Start Bay. A cele- bration of ‘all that is good’ about the Start Bay area showcasing local arts, crafts, food and the great outdoors. As well as stalls there will be a programme of activities and entertainment. In the grounds of Stokeley Farm Shop, from noon to 5pm. Free entry and parking.


5th-10th: Salcombe Yacht Club Regatta. Sailing competitions on the estuary.


5th-17th: Dartmouth Art Society Summer Exhibition, Dartmouth Masonic Hall, Lower Street, 10.15am to 5pm daily. Free entry.


8th-9th: British Firework Championships, Plymouth Hoe.


11th: South Pool Fete. Village fun and games.


11th: Cornwood Agricultural and Horticultural Show.


11th-12th: South Hams Vintage Machinery Rally, Sorely Cross, Kingsbridge. More than 100 vin- tage tractors, plus 30 to 40 cars, lorries and bikes. Donkey rides and and vintage fairground attractions.


11th-18th: Salcombe Town Regatta. A packed programme of fun and festivities, from sandcas- tle competitions to the harbour swim. Salty seaside fun. Fireworks on the 16th.


13th-19th: Totnes Carnival. Children’s fancy dress and the fun ‘odd object competition’. The grand carnival procession takes plae on the 18th and starts around 6pm.


14th: Guided tour of Shilstone. Shilstone House, Devon Rural Archive. See April 17.


18th: Dittisham Regatta. The annual much-loved village event on and by the water with events and many races for all the family to enjoy.


David Brown The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta is the biggest event of the year in the South Hams


18th: Malborough and South Huish Horitcultural Show, Malborough.


19th: Frogmore Regatta, Pool Meadow. Raft race, dog show, rowing races and more. From 12.30pm.


21st: Totnes Orange Races. An accidental tumble with Sir Francis Drake inspired this tradi- tion which is unique to Totnes. A quirky series of races, entrants chase oranges down High Street and Fore Street.


24th-25th: Sea Change Festival, various venues in Totnes and Dartington. A weekend of litera- ture, talks and music in Totnes and at Dartington.


24th-27th: Hope Cove Weekend. Old-fashioned family fun from children’s races to family sand- castle competitions, live music, food and drink.


25th: West Alvington Show.


27th: Aveton Gifford Classic Car Show. An eclectic mix of classic and vintage cars with something for everyone and has a friendly village fete atmosphere. From 11.30am-3.30pm.


30th-1st September: Port of Dart mouth Royal Regatta. Competition and entertainment on and around the river. Thousands of visitors from the region, nation and indeed the world descend on Dartmouth every August for a packed three- day programme.


September


1st: Totnes Pride. A free family friendly day event, with high street procession and a fun-filled after party for those aged 16- plus. 1st: Kingsbridge Show. Take your time wandering in and out


of the tents and admire the entries in horticulture, floral Art, homecraft and domestic Pets. Outside witness the showing and judging of horses, cattle, sheep and more, then watch the grand parade for the results.


6th-9th: Heritage Open Days. Among those taking part are the Cookworthy Musuem, Kings - bridge, Mothecombe House, Mothecombe; the National Trust’s Overbeck’s House and Garden, Salcombe; Greenway House; Devon Caves, Buckfastleigh; South Devon Railway, Buckfastleigh; Coleton Fishacre, near Kingswear; Saltram House, near Plymouth;


8th-23rd: Devon Open Studios. An opportunity to meet artists in their studios, see demonstrations, listen to talks or have a go.


11th: Widecombe Fair. First held in the 1850s, it celebrates traditional rural life and recalls the story of Uncle Tom Cobley and his friends riding to Widecombe Fair on a grey mare.


13th-16th: Heritage Open Days, see September 6th-9th.


14th-16th: DadFest2018, Forest and Beach Centre, Beeson, near Kingsbridge. Judged the ‘best small event in the UK’, it’s the only festival in the UK just for dads and children. DadFest is also home to the Official World Dad Dancing Championship.


15th: Big Night Out on the Beach, South Milton Sands. Join the National Trust Rangers and South Devon Area of Outstanding Beauty team for a fun-filled evening of activities to celebrate the end of the summer in style. 4pm-dark.


15th: Vintage Bus Running Day, Kingsbridge bus station. Services


all day to coast and country vil- lages on buses from yesteryear.


15th: International Agatha Christie Festival, Torre Abbey The King’s Drive, Torquay. One day celebration of Agatha Christie's birthday.


15th-16th: Dart 10K. The aquatic equivalent of a marathon, from Totnes to Dittisham. Swimmers enjoy the shared journey together through South Hams’ rolling hills and overgrown inlets.


18th: Guided tour of Shilstone. Shilstone House, Devon Rural Archive. See April 17.


21st-23rd: Abbfest, Fermoy’s Field A381, Ipplepen. Food, beer and music festival raising funds for local charities.


25th-30th: Kingsbridge Cook - worthy Museum at Harbour House. A Face in the Crowd – exhibition of photographs and artefacts.


29th: Whacky Races, East Allington. Madcap homespun go-karting fun.


30th: Totnes Raft Race. Known as the River Dart Struggle, it starts at Dart Bridge, Buck - fastleigh, and runs 14km to Totnes, through a mixture of white water, fast-flowing weirs and calm stretches of the river.


October


5th-7th: South West Outdoors Festival, East Soar Outdoor Experience. Trail running, water- sports, guided walks, free family activites, camping, bands and more.


10th: Goose Fair, Tavistock. Stalls and entertainment.


15th-23rd: South Hams Arts Trail. The trail leads visitors to


discover not only the artists and their work, but to explore the South Hams.


16th: Guided tour of Shilstone. Shilstone House, Devon Rural Archive. See April 17.


19th-21st: Dartmouth Food Festival. A tempting mix of deli- cious regional food and drink, chef demonstrations, workshops, lively food debates and fun for all the family. One of the high- lights of the South Hams calen- dar year and a must for all lovers of fine food and drink, much of it produced within the area.


25th: Autumn Family Day, Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum.


28th: Museums at Night, Kings - bridge Cookworthy Musuem.


November


24th: Advent Fair in aid of Children’s Hospice South West, The Old Market, Dartmouth. Lots of Christ massy stalls, cakes, jewellery, crafts, preserves, cards and more.


24th: South Brent Winter Carnival, starts 6.15pm.


30th-1st December: Candlelit Dartmouth. Music, food, gifts and more as the town looks for- ward to Christmas.


December


1st: Kingsbridge Celebrates Christmas. Get into the festive spirit. Stalls open all day along Fore Street, festive music and other entertainment.


4th, 11th, 18th: Totnes Christ mas Markets. Late-night shopping is held on three Tuesdays in December. Community choirs, local bands, drummers, food and a Santa’s grotto enliven proceed- ings at these Christmas markets.
