MEMBER NEWS Members do time in aid of charity

Derby's First Citizen, together with 11 of the city's business leaders, are set to face a day behind bars in April – all in the aid of charities chosen by the Mayor. Derby’s Big Lock Up is being co-

ordinated by Ann Bhatti, head of the Connect Derby managed workspace scheme. The Mayor of Derby, Councillor

John Whitby and Ann Bhatti will be among the 12 ‘inmates’ - seven of which are Chamber members - who will face a mock ‘arrest’ at their place of work on 20 April. Inmates include the following Chamber members:

Lindsey Hatfield – Commercial Development Manager at Marketing Derby Crime: Mischief and misdemeanour – don’t ask, she’ll never tell

Jonathan Gray – CEO of Greendog Crime: Crimes against fashion

Dean Jackson – Owner of Huub Crime: Breaking all the rules

Ian Morgan – Chairman of Derbyshire County Cricket Club Crime: Aggravated assault on dress codes

David Nelson – Business Advisory Partner at Smith Cooper Crime: Arson – his spreadsheets are on fire!

Mo Suleman – “The Money Man” at Derby Museums Crime: Laundering chocolate coins and kidnapping Freddo the frog

David Williams – Chairman of Geldards LLP Crime: Stalker of Gregg’s cheese and onion pasties

Both Mo and David have been

interviewed in this publication in the past year, while Ian is a past Chamber board member. After the inmates have been

rounded up they’ll be transferred to the cells at Riverside Chambers, where they’ll be forced to undertake a series of tasks to earn food rations and treats. Their colleagues and members of

the public will be asked to make a small donation to vote for the individual they’d most like to see

locked up and make further donations to view the footage of the inmates doing their time in the cells. The Mayor of Derby, Councillor

John Whitby, said: “I'd like to thank all those who have given up their valuable time and freedom to participate in this innovative and exciting initiative. I'd like to urge everyone from the business community to dig deep in support of the Big Lockup and to help further exceed our fundraising target of £25,000 for my year in office.”

Mitchell Wilde LLP was established in Nottingham in 2005 to provide legal advice and services to owner managed businesses. We also have an office in Derby.

With 150 vehicles on the road across Europe, 25,000 customers and 400 staff, Skills Holidays is a textbook example of how to run an efficient and successful transport business.

Sadly, accidents and incidents do happen and that’s when a highly experienced legal team comes on board.

It’s the time for unemotional, cool heads to ensure liability is correctly established and spurious, expensive and damaging claims are challenged and rejected.

Nigel Skill, Chairman of Skills Holidays

Setting up the terms and conditions of booking details is another vital area to benefit from an experienced legal eye – to pre-empt possible future problems.

Then there are occasional claims relating to injury, damage and even responsibility for lost property. All these are minefields, potentially time consuming and costly, without correct legal advice.

Skills Holidays’ Chairman, Nigel Skill, says Mitchell Wilde are the ideal team for all his varied and demanding legal issues.

“They offer a very personalised service and really understand our business. They are pragmatic and cut straight to the chase in even the most complex situations.

“I am quite happy for key staff to contact them directly for advice. They are considered, wise, highly experienced, very easy to work with and save us a lot of time.

“When it comes to service – they certainly go the extra mile.” business network April 2018 9

Though we continue to serve owner managed businesses, we also work with international and multinational companies who appreciate our personal and dedicated approach.

Most introductions of new clients originate from referrals from existing clients and other professional advisers, who appreciate that we provide a high quality specialist service to our clients as a result of our niche experience.
