partner Fabio Alex Rosso, area manager for APC Food – Bakery for the Comas technologies, to reassure their custom- ers that the service and scope of supply will continue and will only be enhanced under the new company structure. “There are huge advantages in us working together, both for us and for our customers,” explains Fabio. “Our ability to identify potential projects for both technologies and specific application fields gives us additional sales opportuni- ties, but also helps our customers too because they can build complete lines and bakery plants with equipment from a single supplier. That makes communica- tion easier, helps to ensure a more secure outcome, helps smooth administration and allows GEA to take complete owner- ship of the project from start to finish”. Markets around the world are in constant change and so plants need to provide a balance between providing the consistency to continually produce the products consumers want, and the flex- ibility to innovate and drive the market. For example, in the Asia Pacific
region, tastes have a British influence. “Crackers are very popular, including those with cheese or chocolate,” says Giuseppe. “But manufacturers are con-
tinually looking for new niche products that can give them a market edge.” Fabio adds that in Thailand, Korea and Japan, cakes are more popular, but again, there’s a constant demand for creativity. “People like soft, very sweet products and they don’t eat bakery for breakfast. They also like small portions so we need to make high volumes of small packages.”
Giuseppe explains that product de- velopment was one area in which being part of GEA really helps: “Our custom- ers have access to our two GEA Bakery Experience Centers (BEC) in Italy that has experienced food technologists who work closely with customers to develop new recipes, improve existing ones and perfect production processes. We can help customers to develop products within their range or create something totally different from nothing more than an idea. Whatever our customers want to do, we have the ability to design and supply systems that can turn their ideas into reality.”
The GEA name is globally known, especially amongst the larger multi- national organisations. It’s here that the
benefit of enhanced financial security re- ally matters. “We now have the ability to tender for much larger contracts and the global service network to provide after- sales support,” he notes. “We also have over 100 years of combined engineering experience that permeates the whole GEA product range to call upon when we need to.”
That said, Comas and Imaforni have worked very well throughout Asia using agents with strong connections with lo- cal customers and deep expertise in the bakery market.”
The bakery business for GEA in Asia is
still strong and, according to Giuseppe, is set to become even better. “Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam are very strong for the cracker products with Thailand and Korea selling more cakes and cookies. We are also beginning to do well in Japan which is very exciting for us.”
Giuseppe and Fabio say that both brands have a great reputation in Asia and GEA now offers the best scope of supply, allowing it to build turnkey plants from a single source.
