strong emphasis on the latest and most innovative bakery equipment. To help with the show, DEBAG, a global baking technology specialist, provided innovative baking and refrig- eration technology for several stands, including the trade fair stand of the Central Association of the German Bakers Academy (Zentralverband der Akademie Deutsches Bäckerhandwerk e. V.) – another important step to sup- port traditional baking. DEBAG has a comprehensive portfolio

present the row on edge to a pusher. This guides the bags through the wrap- per's forming box and a repeat cycle completes the 2 x 5 collation, which is then sealed in film.

"Instead of stacking the bags, using a race track collator not only provides much gentler handling, but by wrap- ping the bags on edge, it also gives the multipack a narrower facing for better use of shelf space," notes PFM product specialist Alan Atkinson. The multipacks are wrapped with a block bottom seal, allowing stand-up on-shelf presentation.

Savings in packaging materials come

from the intrinsic tightness of this form of multipack and optimisation of pack dimensions, as Alan explains: "Vertical form-fill-seal methods require much larg- er bags since individual packs tumble in under gravity and in any orientation. However, multipacks created on the PFM Compact machine are virtually the same size as the contents."

DEBAG provides equipment for Green Week

International Green Week, which ran from 19 to 28 January 2018 in Berlin, is amongst the world’s largest trade fairs for food and agriculture, and includes a

of production and shop ovens, cooling and proving technology, and control and networking software, so it can supply all solutions directly. In total, DEBAG has fitted six trade fair stands at the 83rd Green Week with eight oven stations, 14 fully automatic proofers and various accessories, highlighting the company’s commitment to the future of bakers and baking.

“Our aim is to deliver innovative

products to the baking trade that will help to overcome the challenges faced by a market for bakery products that is in transition and to open up the snack market as a new field of business – in Germany, Europe and all around the world”, explains DEBAG sales manager, Oliver Theiß.

GEA tackles Asia region with new acquisitions

In the past three years, GEA has ac- quired both Comas and Imaforni – two companies renowned for the bakery equipment and expertise. Here, we look at how the companies are com- bining to offer complete lines from a single supplier

In 2015, GEA acquired Comas, an Italian manufacturer of equipment and complete production lines for cakes, pies, cookies, layer cakes, pastry and special applications for pizza and bread. Less than a year later, Imaforni – a supplier of advanced complete lines

for crackers, soft and hard biscuits and snacks – also became part of GEA. The companies had always worked together and had complementary products, so how has being absorbed affected the re- lationship and the companies’ presence in Asia, one of their key markets? Giuseppe Robbi, area manager for APC Food – Bakery in Asia (and previously at Imaforni), explains: “The companies had always been close, and we had already cooperated with Comas in the past because we both specialise in our field of expertise, and in many

cases we used the same sales channels in Asia. Therefore, the combination of Comas and Imaforni solutions are not a surprise for most of our customers, even if the cooperation is now more efficient and evident for them, bringing the advantage of being a single solution provider.”

Comas and Imaforni are both well- known in Asia, and in some cases – especially with local companies – they are better known than their larger parent. But as GEA becomes the key brand, it is important for Giuseppe and his
