Technology & Precision Farming £5m fund to fix ‘fragmented’

farm innovation pipeline • Goal to harness industry expertise • Practical benefi ts are key priority • Grants fund post-graduate research

A

£5m fund for Britain’s next generation of agri- cultural experts has been

set up by the Agriculture and Hor- ticulture Development

Board

(AHDB) in an effort to overhaul the industry’s “fragmented” inno- vation and skills pipeline. The money will be ploughed into supporting PhD university students over the next fi ve years, following an AHDB report which identifi ed a UK productivity gap worth over £4bn to agriculture in lost gross domestic product.

Technology Modern agriculture is a diverse

and highly advanced technolog- ical industry which has attract-

ed increasing numbers of uni- versity students over the last 10 years, according to the Universi- ties and Colleges Admissions Ser- vice (UCAS). The number of UK agricultural students has risen by more than a quarter over the past decade –

to 2,085 students in 2017 from 1,485 in 2008. But industry ex- perts have warned that the UK needs to drive change within the sector to keep pace with compet- itor countries.

Innovation and research is

seen as the main source of long- term agricultural productivity growth, There is also a direct cor- relation between business perfor- mance and levels of education. The AHDB believes investment in this area is critical to the success of UK agriculture post-Brexit.

Scheme will help improve productivity

The AHDB believes its £5m will build on previous and existing studentships to deliver new experts and science with practical benefi ts across agriculture and horticulture. The levy board already

works closely with UK universities, colleges and research institutes through its AHDB Postgraduate

Studentship Programme. All have a record of excellence in research as well as providing high-quality and well managed research degree programmes. The programme aims

to deliver useable scientifi c developments that are relevant to industry priorities. At the same time it helps to develop the next generation of technical

experts for the agriculture and horticulture industries. Successful applicants to

the programme are expected to demonstrate that their research proposals meet the priorities of at least one AHDB sector body. These cover beef and lamb, cereals and oilseeds, dairy, horticulture, pork and potatoes.

Central fertiliser placement Under-root fertilisation between the twin rows of each DeltaRow ensure optimum fertiliser delivery to the roots.

tramline mechanism With automatic tramline cre- ation, one of the twin rows is deactiva ted while the seeding rate for the other is doubled. This creates tramline widths suitable for implements with soil-preserving agricultural tyres, without reducing seeding rates.

LEMKEN AZURIT. ALL GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES.

Sowing with the Azurit: central under-root fertili- sation, seed row reconsoli- dation, DeltaRow seed placement and seed cover. A travel speed of up to 15 km/h, a central seed hopper and a logical, intui- tive operating concept deliver superior effi ciency.

more space for each plant with the trian gular

DeltaRow system Staggered seed placement for substantially improved growth conditions: plants receive more nutrients, more water and more light.

DeltaRow delivers extra sur- face area to each maize plant with unchanged stock- ing density.
