Look at bigger picture on herbicide resistance

Blackgrass could become resistant to glyphosate – matching the expe- rience of growers battling ryegrass resistance in Australia, a leading scientist has warned. Reporting

on instances of

ryegrass resistance to glyphosate in Australia, Paul Neve of Roth- amsted Research pointed out that there were no known reasons why blackgrass in the UK would not fol- low the same path.

“There is some evidence that some populations of black-grass are evolving reduced sensitivity to glyphosate, and this is down to several factors,” said Dr Neve. “Glyphosate use has consist- ently risen on UK farms, while at the same time widespread resist- ance to post-emergence herbicides is putting pressure on glyphosate as rare glyphosate survivors are not controlled by post-ems. “Reductions in tillage also in- crease the probability that rare

survivors will persist, whilst lat- er and multiple applications of glyphosate increase the propor- tion of the population that is ex- posed to glyphosate.” Laura Davies of ADAS urged growers to act responsibly to min- imise the risk of glyphosate resist- ance, particularly in black-grass, ryegrass, and bromes, referring them to the 2015 AHDB guidelines. There were no reported cases of glyphosate resistance in the UK but to maintain this it was crucial that as an industry we act respon- sibly, she said. “Prevent survivors, maximise effi cacy, use alterna- tives and monitor success,” add- ed Dr Davies. Barrie Hunt, technical develop- ment manager for Monsanto, ac- knowledged the work the industry had done in lobbying for the re-au- thorisation of glyphosate. And he re-iterated the impor- tance of managing blackgrass for resistance and keeping to the best practise guidelines – reminding delegates that “eradication of re- sistance once detected is not pos- sible”.
