SDHI gains acceptance on barley for brewing and distilling
British growers of malting barley for brewing and distilling will be able to use the new fungicide Elatus Era on crops this season.
It follows news that the product’s SDHI active ingredient – benzovindif- lupyr (Solatenol) – has been accepted by the British Beer and Pub Association and Campden BRI for use on malting barley. “This is an important breakthrough for Elatus Era in barley, following on from its successful launch last season, which was mainly into wheat crops,” said Syngenta fi eld technical manager, Iain Hamilton. Elatus Era combines the broad spec- trum disease control of Solatenol, with the leading barley triazole, prothiocona- zole, says Mr Hamilton. It could be used on both wheat and barley – simplifying product use on the farm.
Elatus Era can now be used on malting barley
Around 1.9m tonnes of British barley are grown for malting. During its devel- opment, benefi ts seen from using Elatus Era in cereals included disease control, leaf protection and consistent yield per- formance.
Single-purpose treatment controls seed-borne disease
Spring barley growers will be turning to new sin- gle-purpose seed treatments following the loss of regulatory approval of two popular options. Redigo Pro (prothioconazole + tebuconazole) – a single-purpose seed treatment in wheat – is also available for spring barley. Its usage is set to increase following the loss of both Raxil Star (fl uopyram + prothioconazole + tebuconazole) and Kinto (triticonazole + prochloraz). Adam Tidswell of manufacturer Bayer says Redigo Pro is “perfectly placed to fi ll the gaps” left by the withdrawal of Raxl Star and Kinto – pro- viding comprehensive early season seed-borne dis- ease control.
“Spring barley is only in the soil for four to fi ve
months, so it’s vital it gets off to the best start. You need to maintain control of seed-borne diseases like Microdochium nivale, loose and covered smuts and leaf stripe, all of which can be damaging to yield or quality if left untreated.” Redigo Pro has label claims for the main seed- borne diseases and reduces ergots, says Mr Tidswell. “Losing spring barley approval for Raxil Star has left a hole, but growers are fortunate that Redi- go Pro is available to use without any noticeable change in performance.”
