Clearfield rape provides fresh weed control options
A
new Spring Clearfield oil- seed rape could give UK growers a valuable tool in their fight against weeds as well surprising them with its produc- tion potential, says breeder DSV UK’s Michael Farr.
Adoption of the Clearfield
approach, which allows grow- ers to treat a number of brassica weeds in-situ without affecting the crops themselves, has been growing steadily during the last five years, says Michael Farr of breeder DSV UK. To date, virtually all Clearfield varieties have been designed for winter sowing. But now DSV and its partners across Europe have developed the first Clearfield OSR variety specifically intend- ed for spring drilling. “Called Click CL, not only does the new variety have the all-im-
portant tolerance to BASF Clear- field herbicides, it also combines excellent production statistics with highly beneficial agronom- ic characteristics giving it a very valuable position in the rotation.” Being a hybrid variety, Click CL demonstrates early vigour which translates into spring growth followed by high yields, says Mr Farr. “These yields have also proved remarkably consist- ent across a variety of different years and growing conditions.” Agronomically, Click CL is a medium height variety with good standing power and medi- um flowering. In farm trials, it has delivered very good oil yields from a combination of the varie- ty’s yield potential and high oil contents from its medium-sized seeds.
