Development opportunities for beef industry advisers
Advisers to the beef industry are being encouraged to hone their skills by taking part in the De- veloping Beef Expertise Pro- gramme.
AHDB Beef & Lamb is run- ning the programme for a sec- ond time following its popular- ity three years ago. The scheme is open to consultants and ad- visers to the beef industry who want to expand their knowledge through continuous profession- al development (CPD). The 2018/2019 programme will start in June 2018 and will include five two-day meetings over a 12-month period, cover- ing various topics affecting beef enterprises. Consultants, advis- ers, vets and industry represent- atives are encouraged to apply to join the group. AHDB Beef & Lamb knowl-
edge exchange manager Sarah Pick said raising profitability per hectare was a a priority. “One of the key ways to deliver this is
to ensure well-trained and ex- perienced consultants and ad- visers continue to be available to the beef and sheep industry.” The 2015-16 programme produced a group of 14 trained consultants and advisers who have helped deliver a number of beneficial initiatives. Ms Pick said: “It is important that those who apply are available to de- liver independent consultan- cy once the programme is com- pleted.”
The five meetings will be held in different regions across England. Topics will include meeting market specification, business tools, antimicrobial re- sistance, nutrition and grass- land management, breeding, genetics and professional skills The closing date for applica- tions is 30 March 2018. Appli- cants will be informed of their success by 16 April 2018. For details, email Yanna.

Health and genetics are focus for sheep group
Flock health and genetics were a key focus for 12 innovative mem- bers of the National Sheep Asso- ciation’s Next Generation Ambas- sadors group.
The group of 20 to 34-year-olds wishing to expand their knowl- edge came together for its first three-day delivery session last month – forming a basis of skills to take home and drive forward their own businesses and the wid- er sheep sector.
This is the fifth year an am- bassador group has been select- ed since its launch in 2014, and forms one part of NSA’s work un- der its Next Generation banner which is dedicated to encouraging and supporting the sheep farm- ers and service providers of the future.
NDA communications officer Hannah Park said: “We had a fan- tastic first session this week with this year’s group, an impressive
calibre of individuals who are all so passionate about what they do. “Our initial session gave ambas- sadors the opportunity to get to know each other and provided a platform to learn what similari- ties and differences run through the group, in the routes each took into the sheep sector and how they manage their flocks.” Sessions were delivered by
AHDB Beef and Lamb alongside Phillipa Page, a specialist sheep
vet with Flock Health. They in- cluded a look at practical per- formance recording, estimated breeding values (EBVs), flock health planning and sustaina- ble parasite control.
The programme is an oppor- tunity for individuals to network among like-minded individuals to share and discuss ideas and expe- riences. Ambassadors are select- ed from across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
