IN THE FIELD Richard Overthrow
Crops will ‘go for growth’ once warmer weather arrives
ebruary’s tasks are hope- fully in full swing by now – having become March tasks due to the unfriendly weather conditions many of us experienced. Fear not – it is not too late: ide-

ally fi rst nitrogen and sulphur doses will be on by mid March, and spring crop drilling by the end of the month. As ever, spring linseed and rape can wait till next month without any yield penalty. Later this month T0 fungi- cide treatments will need some thought. Winter wheat crops will be due a treatment at the end of this month or early next, but all should be examined for yellow rust and mildew as these will infl uence planning.
All crops will have similar lev- els of septoria so treatment for this will have to be guided by vari- etal resistance though some chlo- rothalonil would be a cheap insur- ance treatment.
Chlorothalonil will be suffi - cient for septoria, with a triazole or strobilurin included for rust. This treatment is usually ap- plied with early growth regula- tors or spring herbicides, and will ideally not be applied more than four weeks before the T1 (leaf 3) treatment.
Rainfall Winter barley crops may need T0 sprays applied this month. Cold weather over winter kept most crops clean but the rain-
fall we saw last month could get rhynchosporium and net blotch moving. The T1 isn’t applied un- til GS31 so an earlier (T0) treat- ment can’t be ruled out if early disease pressure builds. In oilseed rape crops, an ear- ly spring or stem extension fun- gicide (typically mid March) has been a routine input as light leaf spot dominated the rape disease spectrum. However disease inci- dence has declined recently and varietal resistance has improved so this isn’t a routine spray. That said, if the disease is present around stem extension it should be treated and crops should be regular monitored up to the next fungicide timing. Second or main nitrogen dos-
