The Perfect Dog?

How many owners dream of having the “perfect dog”? You decided to add a furry friend to your family, and you imagined long walks through the forest with them happily trotting along beside you, then jump back into the car and head home, where Fido curls up in front of the fi re, and you have a relaxing cup of tea. Often, the reality is slightly diff erent!

Many owners *think* they need to have the perfect dog. They feel others are judging them if Fido pulls on the lead, or barks at another dog, often avoiding other owners as they are embarrassed by their dogs behaviour. But what is perfect? This really depends on your lifestyle and what you personally expect from your dog. Having a Chihuahua that pulls on the lead is a very diff erent situation to having a pulling Great Dane – the Chihuahua owner might be ok with them pulling, but would like them to be more confi dent around other dogs.

Every owner

has diff erent expectations and will be willing to accept behaviours that another owner might fi nd unacceptable.

In reality, the “perfect dog” is one that fi ts in with your family life, is healthy and trained to a level that meets your family’s needs.

The average pet dog

owner is unlikely to need their dog to sit calmly for 5 minutes in the middle of a training room, whilst twenty other dogs walk around it, but you might want them to not jump up on people, come back when called, walk nicely on a lead and be able to walk past another dog without turning into the Tasmanian Devil. All of these things are achievable using

reward based training

methods, and everyone can learn how to train their dog to be THEIR perfect dog!
