[EDITOR’S NOTE]

Welcome to our first issue for 2018! To get started, we take a look inside two businesses in this issue – one with a long history, and one much more recently launched. Operating a successful business for 150 years is not a trivial accomplishment – and it’s clearly not the work of any one person. In our Spotlight for this issue, we take a look at the 150th anniversary of Harrington Hoist, celebrated throughout the year in 2017. We learn about the work of founder Edwin Harrington and speak with Director of Business Development Jason Said

about the future of the business, and some of things that have made that history possible. We also get a glimpse of the numerous ways the company celebrated this milestone

throughout 2017 to support employee engagement and emphasize community involvement. For all of the things that have to be done to sustain a business for a century and a half, empowering and engaging employees to serve your customers and your community is a great candidate for executive leadership’s “job one”. Launching a new business is also a tall task. You may recall a conversation we had with

construction technology expert James Benham from JBKnowledge (jbknowledge.com) in our May/June issue last year about under-investment in technology across the construction industry. Some truly astonishing capabilities are emerging, and the list of industries that have been fundamentally disrupted by technology is long and growing. Of course, adopting these new capabilities is not as simple as buying this year’s bright shiny

new thing and plugging it in. Integration of any new technology with an existing work process poses real challenges, and that’s ultimately where the value of the technology had to be proven. Brian Saab, the founder of UnEarth, is uniquely positioned to bring two worlds together with an extensive background in technology and a family operating a construction business. Check out our Feature article in this issue to learn more about Brian, his team and their work. If you want to engage with businesses like these and many others, there are a wide array

of conferences and exhibitions where you can hear from and meet their leaders. We preview a few of 2018’s most important events for the lifting and rigging sector in this issue. And there are a lot of opportunities – we haven’t even written about every event you see listed on the sidebar of this page! We’ll be providing a lot more details on other events as they become available. Be sure to let us know where you’ll be exhibiting or which of these conferences you may attend and we’ll be sure to look for you there. We look forward to serving you for another year!

Best Regards,
