ocated strategically in Manheim, Pennsylvania, Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, Corona, California and South Holland, Illinois, Harrington Hoists, Inc., is a leading manufacturer of revolutionary manual, electric, and air chain hoists, wire rope hoists, below-the-hook devices and crane products. Known in the
industry for world-class products, a driven sales focus, and outstanding customer service, Harrington is committed to do whatever it takes to satisfy their customers’ needs.
And they’ve been doing it for more than a century and a half. You read that correctly; in fact, 2018 marks the
company’s 151st year in business. Now a wholly owned subsidiary and manufacturing site of KITO Corporation—the largest producer of chain and wire rope hoists in the world—Harrington has, through the years, engrained itself into the industry. Its status today as a ISO 9001: 2008-certified market leader and innovator in the hoist and crane industry would have made founder Edwin Harrington proud—a
southern Vermont native who evolved his machine tool business and landed Harrington Hoists in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1867, at a time when rapid changes in the industry were taking place and competition was fierce. But Harrington prevailed, and became a major player in the hoist business with the innovation of the spur gear hoist, the use of anti-friction bearings, and the pioneering of the Weston-style brake.
In 1968, Shingle Belting acquired the company and moved it to Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania (just outside of Philadelphia). It was also during this period that Harrington developed a vendor relationship with KITO Corporation—who would eventually acquire Harrington in 1990.
Prior to that, in 1978, the Arbee Corporation took over the Harrington business and moved the headquarters to its current location in Manheim, about 65 miles west of Philadelphia.
After the KITO acquisition, Harrington expanded its exposure in the U.S. market by opening the facility in Corona (CA) in 1993. Tis division has since tripled its original size.
A Productive Partnership
“I think the vison of a family owned business that strives to be the highest-quality and most innovative hoist manufacturer in the market is what drove Edwin Harrington, and in many ways, drives the company today,” explained Jason Said, Director of Business Development. “He was credited with being the first person to put power to a manual chain hoist, and paired that with a Weston-style load break, which was very innovative at the time.”
Harrington sponsored a spaghetti dinner at their local VFW on Veterans Day.
