Online alternative to private tutors, new appointment, exercise your rights, the cost of non-attendance, plus Star Pupil of the Month

help your children, and how can they help themselves through important GCSEs, SATS and 11+ exams? Well now there’s an excellent alternative to private tutors thanks to father-of-three, Eddy Chan (pictured), who became exasperated by the options available within the tutoring sector. Armed with the knowledge that one quarter of pupils now use private tutors, Eddy created an entirely new platform www. schoolexams.co.uk, which teams up with top teachers and the main exam boards to provide past exam papers online. Not only this, but the answers are fully explained, which allows students to work through at a pace that suits them, and students are guided by online tutors, who move through each question step-by-step, explaining the method and working through to finding the solution. There’s computer animated graphics for maximum engagement and the facility can be revisited as frequently as required – remaining accessible for a whole year. Bearing in mind that a home tutor can cost anything from £20-£100 per hour, the cost of the entire package at Schoolexams. co.uk works out less than an average hour with a private tutor. Being accessible via phone, tablet, laptop or PC, “it’s the closest thing to having a tutor right next to you,” explains Eddy, who also points out that unregulated tutors could represent “an accident waiting to happen”.

chool exams. That’s a phrase that generally strikes fear into the hearts of not only pupils but their parents too. How can you

Schoolexams.co.uk provides animated video walkthroughs for more than 130 GCSE maths questions from past papers and sample papers. The maths tutorials are described as an ‘internet first’ and are taught by a teacher who sets and marks GCSE exam papers, with over 90 minutes of video content per GCSE paper. The site’s GCSE English material is unique and has been written by former KS2, 11+ and GCSE examiners. It reveals the secrets to exam success by explaining how students are being assessed and what skills they require in order to provide perfect answers. Both the Teenage

Cancer Trust and Great Ormond Street Hospital have adopted the facility as it is ideal for poorly students who are unable to attend school. “I have given all patients of Great Ormond Street and TCT free access, including access for siblings,” said Eddy, who has made a huge investment in terms of time and money for the new facility.

“It takes three weeks just to get one paper ready. One exam represents three papers. The videos are then

verified with another teacher. We have just filmed the latest foundation papers and it has taken six months – they have just been made available on the site,” he adds. With the ultimate goal of raising

standards of English and maths across the country, Eddy believes that this is a practical way to help students and parents alike. The entire package costs just £29.99 and modules are also available individually. • To watch a sample video and to find out more, visit www.schoolexams.co.uk

The cost of not

attending school Parents are duty-bound to ensure that their school-age children attend school or college – and recent figures suggest that there can be damaging effects when attendance drops below 95%, which represents two weeks’ absence in one year. Research shows a direct

correlation between good attendance and the achievements of both primary school children and those during their GCSE years. Naturally, this does not apply to children who suffer from serious health conditions. Parents are urged to ensure their child attends school and doesn’t have time off for minor illnesses, holidays or routine medical appointments. Local councils and schools can use legal powers if children are missing school without good reason. These include: • Parenting orders whereby parents have to attend parenting classes. • Educational supervision orders during which a supervisor is appointed to help the child back into education.

• School attendance orders which could result in a prosecution and a fine, or a penalty notice, which could also lead to a prosecution or even a jail sentence if it is not paid.
