ARTS & CULTURE 061 Works of love
Looking for the perfect Valentine’s gift? The Folio Society has compiled a list of some of their beautiful books – from classic literature, to modern fi ction and poetry, these works of love will make the perfect gift for both him and her.
• Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Truman Capote, £29.95 Beginning with a chance glimpse in a shared apartment building, Truman Capote’s enchanting novella charts the friendship between an aspiring writer who has just moved to New York City, and his neighbour Holly Golightly, girl about town, genteel gold-digger and free spirit. It is one of the quintessential American stories of the 20th century. This edition features striking artwork by Canadian artist Karen Klassen, whose background is in fashion illustration. Holly is at the centre of each of her images, including her dramatic binding design, depicting Holly on top of the Manhattan skyline.
• The Princess Bride by William Goldman, £38.95 Featuring giants, duels, man-eating swamp rats and, of course, true love, Goldman’s funny and poignant lampoon of the fairy tale tradition has inadvertently become a classic of the genre. It tells the story of Buttercup, an exceptionally beautiful girl who rises from unlikely beginnings to receive the dubious hand-in- marriage of the barrel-like Prince Humperdinck. Meanwhile her true love, Westley the farm boy, must cross perilous seas, climb the Cliffs of Insanity, fi ght off man-eating swamp rats and survive the abominable Zoo of Death to rescue her from a grisly end.

Exhibition fi rst for popular local artists
Launching on 10th February, Portico Art Gallery will, for the fi rst time, host the works of local artists Lynda Beazleigh and Katie Wilson. Lynda and Katie met at Maidstone Girls Grammar School and went on to study an art foundation course together in Canterbury. They then studied for their degrees in different parts of the country until they both returned to Kent to raise their families. Their mutual passion for art has led them to rekindle their work together. Kent pulls at Katie’s heartstrings as it is the home of many happy childhood memories and she now lives and works within its stunning countryside. With the recent addition of a puppy to her family she is discovering more scenic Kentish walks daily, where she fi nds endless inspiration. Lynda, meanwhile, paints and draws in and around
Sevenoaks exploring the sense of space and her own expression.
Entry to the exhibition, which runs until March, is free and all works are for sale.
• Portico Art Gallery, 25 London Road, Riverhead, Sevenoaks TN13 2BU is open Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm. Call 01732 456655 or visit www.

THE SAD SONG CO The Forum Basement (Sussex Arms), Tunbridge Wells, 18th February The Sad Song Co is essentially a solo project by multi-instrumentalist Nigel Powel, with ‘silent’ partner Jason Moulster, who contributes on bass guitar. It is a strange set-up in as much as Jason prefers to stay in the background. If I had to compare a band to describe their sound, it would be diffi cult. REM maybe? • Call The Forum on 08712 777101.
THE SWINGING LITTLE
BAND The Grey Lady, Tunbridge Wells, 24th February One of Kent’s ultimate swing bands, these guys are essentially a highly sought-after function band. Swing they most certainly do with all the ‘Rat Pack’ hits included. When you hear them, they sound class, pure class. • Call The Grey Lady on 01892 544700.

DUCK SOUP The Beau Nash, Tunbridge Wells, 10th February
Guitarist Nigel Bagge has informed me there will be four musicians playing at this event. As one of my personal favourites, I was delighted to hear this news and particularly excited to hear that joint lead guitarist David Hay is also one of the four. Ed Collins and Grant Tunbridge make up the rhythm section on drums and bass respectively. • Call the pub on 01892 539350.
