108 PLANNING FOR LATER LIFE Vital vitamins
Some types of arthritis such as rheumatoid are autoimmune conditions, meaning the body mistakenly attacks its own joint tissue. It is therefore important to make sure you’re getting enough vitamin D, which is vital for supporting a healthy immune system. Make sure you’re eating plenty of foods rich in vitamin D such as fi sh, milk, fortifi ed cereals and eggs.
Let your body rest
Statistics have shown that 68% of people with arthritis report depression when their pain is at its worst, not to mention how many people report severe fatigue as one of the main side affects from the condition, therefore looking after yourself and allowing your body time to rest should be at the top of your priority list. Treat yourself to a warm bath where you can let the warm water help soothe the pain.

Are you entitled to Warm Homes funding?
Many residents in Tonbridge & Malling could be receiving help to keep their homes warm this winter via Warm Homes Assistance – and Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council is urging residents to get in touch to find out whether they are eligible for help. The Warm Homes scheme can help fund a variety of home improvements including: installing heating for the whole house for the fi rst time (for example a gas fi red central heating/hot water system); repairing a heating system or replacing an old ineffi cient boiler, and installing cavity wall or loft insulation.
Residents may be eligible for help if they: • Live in their own home or privately rent a home where they have a repairing obligation and receive certain income- related benefi t.
• Live in their own home and are over 65 years of age, and are living in a cold home and have a medical condition such as cardiovascular, respiratory, pulmonary, mental health, disability, long-term health
condition as confi rmed by a health or social care professional. • Live in their own home and are living in a cold home and have a serious long-term health condition, or have a vulnerable child with a respiratory condition living with them.
Councillor Piers Montague, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “If you know of a relative, friend or neighbour in the Tonbridge & Malling area who is living in a cold home or needs help to get their heating system back into good working order, then please tell them about the Warm Homes scheme as they may be eligible for help. We want to assist as many people as possible in saving money on their energy bills and to keep warm this winter.” Funding granted through Warm Homes Assistance is repayable upon sale of the property. • To fi nd out more about Warm Homes Assistance, call Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s Housing Team on 01732 876395 or email
