“I think it would be much more sensible if resolutions began generally on January the second”
If the Hollywood heart throb persists with his language lessons, it
could benefit his brain, especially as he gets older. Learning a second language, say experts at the Bilingualism Matters Centre at University of Edinburgh, may have benefits in later life by delaying the onset of dementia symptoms and slowing brain ageing.
Ellen DeGeneres “Everybody always resolves to start exercising, but they never do. You know why? Because it’s January. Who wants to go jogging in the freezing cold?” The star of the TV talk show, The
Ellen DeGeneres Show, has hit the nail on the head. Getting fit and active is a common resolution come January 1st. But while gyms all over the country are bursting at the seams at the beginning of the year, by February it’s unlikely you’ll have to queue for the treadmill. According to a survey of British
adults published by private healthcare company BUPA, 88 percent of people said they failed to keep their resolution last year. And the most common reasons for giving up were lack of commitment and a loss of motivation. Ellen, however, is no slouch when it comes to keeping active.
According to Self magazine she wakes up early to work out and get herself ready for the day ahead. She also has a unique method of keeping herself motivated: one hilarious Instagram video she posted with the caption #MorningWorkout shows her trying to do some crunches while her two dogs – puppies at the time – play beside her. Making your workout or exercise session fun is an ideal way of
keeping yourself motivated, as you’re more likely to stick with something you enjoy.
Helen Fielding “I do think New Year’s resolutions can’t technically be expected to begin on New Year’s Day. Because it’s an extension of New Year’s Eve, smokers are already on a smoking roll and cannot be expected to stop abruptly on the stroke of midnight with so much nicotine in the system. “Also dieting on New Year’s Day isn’t a good
idea as you can’t eat rationally but really need to be free to consume whatever is necessary, moment by moment, in order to erase your hangover. I think it would be much more sensible if resolutions began generally on January the second.” Author of the Bridget Jones books, Helen
Fielding knows a thing or two about how difficult it can be to struggle with health resolutions, as her heroine famously battled with her weight, drinking and smoking throughout all three novels. Thankfully Helen doesn’t seem to share her
character’s bad habits. But she does make a good point about when New Year’s resolutions should start. Quitting all your habits on January 1st can put you under too much pressure, and that’s unlikely to help you achieve your goals. In fact any day is a good day to give up
smoking, cut down on alcohol and eat healthily to lose weight.
