How to
get fit for
Getting fit and enjoying the health benefits that come with being more physically active doesn’t have to cost much – or even anything at all, depending on the activities you choose. The key is to find something you enjoy, something that’s fun, and something you can easily fit into your daily lifestyle. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Walking According to the NHS, people who fit moderate activity like walking into their daily life burn more energy than those who go to the gym regularly. Everyone who is able bodied can do it, and it doesn’t have to cost anything. In fact,

Thinking of joining a gym to work off your excess winter weight? Here’s how to save as many pennies as possible
you might end up saving quite a bit of cash if you walk short journeys instead of taking your car or catching a bus. Start by trying to walk briskly for just
10 minutes a day. The free Active 10 app can help you get into the habit – download it for free by searching ‘Active 10 app’.
Take the stairs Wherever possible, use stairs instead of taking the lift or using an escalator, as according to the NHS stair climbing burns more calories per minute than jogging. If you have stairs at home, try climbing up and down them a few times every hour – if you’re watching TV, try climbing when the advert break comes on.
Skipping A skipping rope doesn’t cost much but it can reap huge fitness rewards, as skipping is a great way to keep fit (and you can do it just about anywhere and at any time). However, it’s much more strenuous
than it looks, so start by skipping for about 20 - 30 seconds, then march on the spot for a similar amount of time – then repeat a few times building up to about 15 minutes altogether. When your fitness levels start to improve, you’ll find you can skip for longer periods.
