Reduce your diabetes risk Several things can increase your risk of Type 2 diabetes as you get older, including being overweight or having high blood pressure. But even if you’re at risk it’s not too late to reduce the odds of developing it. Start by eating healthily and staying as active as possible to keep your weight in check.
Keep your bones strong Losing bone density is a normal part of ageing. However if you lose too much too quickly, it can lead to a condition called osteoporosis, which according to the NHS affects more than three million people in the UK. To keep your bones healthy, you should consider taking the following steps:
• Take regular exercise
• Eat healthily, including lots of foods rich in calcium and vitamin D (dairy foods, green leafy veg and nuts for calcium; oily fish, egg yolks and fortified foods for vitamin D)
• Consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement (ask your pharmacist to recommend a product that would suit you)
• Quit smoking and drink alcohol in moderation
Your heart will thank you if you stay active and keep your weight as healthy as possible
