When it comes to deciding upon that perfect colour scheme, some customers may need a helping hand. Natalie Sylvester, Senior Brand Manager at Dulux Trade reviews some

of the trends set to flourish in 2018, including the highly anticipated Colour of the Year, and how you can inspire customers – and add value – with a few simple suggestions...

Colour at the Heart of 2018

For some, choosing the theme for their latest redecoration project may simply come down to favourite colour combinations; but for those customers that are looking to introduce current trends into their home, the professional decorator can play a key role in the design process. Providing an element of inspiration, Dulux

Trade's parent company, AkzoNobel, publishes the industry-acclaimed ColourFutures guide on an annual basis. Emerging social and economic trends, as well as happenings in the world of design, are researched and interpreted by an international team of colour experts in order to outline predictions on the colour and design trends for the year ahead. The Colour of the Year is integral to the guide, with four different colour palettes created to

showcase the year’s chosen colour. For those customers wanting to incorporate the most up to date trends in their home, 2018’s Colour of the Year is Heart Wood (10YR 28/072), a warm neutral with a hint of heather. The colour was inspired by the recent rise in the use of both wood and leather within interior

decorating and architecture. A variety of woods are experiencing an increase in popularity, but research suggests a tendency towards warmer shades of red, alongside violet and pink. The Heart Wood Home palette, dedicated to the Colour of the Year, provides a sense of calm but

also offers plenty of character. The soft cocoa hues flow into bold, stronger shades of ink blue and purple and for customers considering a more modern design, the palette works well as a backdrop to walnut and brushed brass details, as well as marble and matt-black surfaces. To complement Heart Wood, three alternative trend palettes for 2018 are set to capture what

home means to different personalities. The Comforting Home palette blends Heart Wood with distinct, heritage hues such as terracotta

and antique gold to create a sophisticated and elegant environment. The Inviting Home palette offers the softer, on

trend pastel shades but with an option of framing them by graphic borders of coal grey and dark blues. The cooler shades found within this palette make the perfect partner for any interior that already contains an array of natural materials. Finally, Playful Home projects the warmth of

Heart Wood with the addition of sunshine golds and nature inspired greens. This not only showcases the versatility of 2018’s Colour of the Year but also highlights another trend that will continue to grow throughout the year. From warming red and pink hues to bright, uplifting yellows, bringing the outside in will play an integral part of colour schemes in 2018 as we turn to nature for reassurance and relief from the continuing unpredictability of the world.
