The market for water-based solutions has been expanding recently. However, many professional painters and


decorators have reservations about its performance. Richard Mazurkiewicz, Marketing Manager at Johnstone’s Trade, explains how the brand used Facebook Live to answer the industry’s questions around water-based technology.

AT JOHNSTONE’S TRADE, we’re always looking for ways to improve the products and services that we offer to professionals in the industry. To do this, we work closely with painters and decorators to collate their feedback and insights. Most recently, we’ve been working with


professionals to gather their thoughts on water- based technology. It has been a hot topic of conversation since changes to VOC legislations were announced in 2010 and since then, the industry has been comparing its performance to that of solvent-based technology. By reaching out to professionals, we’ve recognised that there are many who have questions that need answering. In order to do that, we hosted an industry-first


Facebook Live event as part of our latest All Access Day, to give painters and decorators unrestricted access to our technical experts.


The Facebook Live event


We asked our social media community to submit their questions around water-based technology and put them – as well as the questions we received during the live broadcast – to a panel of experts from our technical team. There was a fantastic response, with many


interesting questions submitted. It was apparent that three key themes needed addressing as part of the Q&A: the development of water-based technology, the technical differences between water-based and solvent-based products, and brush maintenance. In response, our technical experts explained that Johnstone’s Trade Aqua products are a


hybrid, which means that they combine the qualities of solvent-based products with the added benefits of water-based technology. On a chemical level, this means that the products incorporate the use of traditional alkyd resin predominantly used in solvent-based products, but in a water-based system. The team also advised viewers that when


cleaning brushes after using the products, it’s important to ensure that the brush is left standing up in paint up to the ferrule and cleaned against the edge of the can – especially if the brush will be inactive for any amount of time.


The All Access Day


The video was hosted during our latest All Access Day, which gave members of the Talk Group for Painters and Decorators a behind-the-scenes look at the Johnstone’s Trade head offices in Birstall. Attendees took part in various activities, including the application of Aqua solutions in a


number of common scenarios and a Graco spraying machine taster session. They also took part in an exclusive blind testing session with water-based technologies, some of which haven’t been launched in the market yet. Members of the forum were also given a look into the history of the Johnstone’s Trade and PPG brands. At Johnstone’s Trade, we firmly believe that


building long-lasting relationships with professionals in the industry and giving them access to the technical experts is vital. Our All Access Day and Facebook Live panel event provided a great opportunity for us to do this, and we’re looking to host similar events in the future.
