An overview of The Painting and Decorating Association in 2017 from Neil Ogilvie CEO

and identify common elements that could make a contribution to a painting, decorating and finishing sector approach. The quality of the lecturers’ training can increase the attractiveness of the sector for young people thus boosting skills levels and employability.

External Committees

To support the needs of those working and training, the PDA participates in a number of external committees that bring together topical issues within the industry with the aim of raising awareness and providing solutions.

Build UK

Build UK is the leading representative organisation for the UK construction industry. By bringing together clients, main contractors, trade associations representing over 11,500 specialist contractors and other organisations committed to industry collaboration. More than 36 trade associations now sit within this umbrella organisation. PDA and NFRC being two of the largest. As well as myself sitting on the main committee representing the PDA, Stephen Bagnall sits on their Leadership and Image Group while Richard Parry from Ian Williams sits on the Occupational Health Task Group.

International Association of Painting Contractors (UNIEP)

Our membership of UNIEP further enhances our international commitment, as it ensures that industry-specific topics are placed on national and European agendas.

Awards and Competitions

Trophy Awards 2017 On 6 July 2017 the PDA presented its 29th Annual Premier Trophy Awards along with the Apprentice/Trainee Awards. The event took place at the Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair London. The feedback from the day was recorded as being one of the best ever. The 30th Anniversary event will be held on 5 July

2018 at the fully refurbished Plaisterers’ Hall London. Application forms for this very special anniversary event are available now on our website. The Apprentice/Trainee Competition will also take

place in spring of 2018. Again, the application form for the apprentice competition is available in both hard copy and a download on the website. Work on both of these projects is now well underway.

Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year

The Annual Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year Competition took place in October 2017 at Doncaster Hub College, South Yorkshire. This is the fourth time the competition has been held at

this particular venue. On behalf of the PDA I would like to thank all of the staff and apprentices at the College who helped to make the competition such a fantastic day. The winners from both Level 1 and Level 2 received their awards on 11 November at the National Conference Gala Dinner, held this year in Bristol.

PDA Golf and Activity Day

A successful golf and go-karting day and evening dinner was held in May this year in Redditch.

Trade Exhibitions The PDA had a new stand and location at this year’s National Painting and Decorating Show at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Hopefully many of you will have visited us on the stand.

Sponsorship

I have secured new sources of funding for sponsorship of our events. This also helps to maintain excellent relationships with all the long- standing manufacturers who have been pleased to sponsor the Trophy Awards, Golf day, National and Regional Conferences and the Paperhanger of the Year competition. The Associate membership increase in numbers

helps to offer a range of advice, helplines, and other promotional material to PDA Members as well as adding almost £50,000 a year to our income stream. They have been generous in their support covering

all of our events in 2017 and we acknowledge with gratitude, the significant contribution that sponsors make to the work carried out by the PDA.

Publicity and Promotion

The PDA continues to work closely with Shepherd PR in promoting the Association to the public, Members, and non-members. Once again for the 2017/18 period we have

continued to negotiate free advertising in some Associate’s publications during the year: Johnstone’s, Crown, and Brewers.

The Decorator Magazine

The magazine continues to be published and edited by Catherine Saint Publicity with art working by Stuart Elding, and goes from strength to strength but we always welcome any feedback and ideas for improvement and new features. It’s a magazine for all members so please do send news, projects and images for inclusion.

My Travels

As mentioned earlier, I have recently completed many days out on the road visiting many of our Associate partners for their yearly review meeting and updates to maintain the partnership

agreement between both parties, both buoyant and productive and of financial interest. In readiness for 2018, Crown Paints are about

to launch a new PDA Member loyalty card scheme which can be used at any of their decorating centres across the UK. More details of this will be on the next E-newsletter. Again, this year I was one of the judges

following for the PDA Apprentice/Trainee competitions which take took place at Bournemouth & Poole and Hinckley Colleges.

Organisation and Administration Current National Office Staff are:

Neil Ogilvie Chief Executive Officer

Denice Harper Membership Services Manager

Yvonne Dominey-Tay Administration and Events Manager

Conclusion Over the past year the PDA Strategy Committee has continued to work productively on our new vision and mission for the future of the Association. Recognising that the current system of management was becoming increasingly unpopular and with fewer Members willing to participate at local, regional and national level, the National Council undertook a strategic review of the Association, including advice from external consultants. This work will assist us in creating an agile

organisation that can take us forward in a fast-changing sector and which enables us to become more relevant to the needs and requirements of our membership. The Association remains indebted to all its Members for

their loyalty and support,

particularly those who play an active part in the Association either at local Branch, Regional or National level.
