SEA SURVIVAL

FEATURE SPONSOR

GLOBAL LEADER IN SAFETY AND SURVIVAL SOLUTIONS

As a global leader in safety and survival solutions, Survitec’s commitment to innovation and growth in the wind energy industry has gone from strength to strength as it offers a wide range of safety solutions designed specifically for this growing sector

While being best known for its marine safety equipment and aviation survival technology, the company’s wide-ranging capability also extends to solutions directly supporting the offshore energy market’s requirements, including fibre and wire rope, lifting and rigging equipment, inspection services, power tooling and height safety.

OFFSHORE CREDENTIALS Survitec’s offshore credentials have been further enhanced following its recent appointment as safety partner by Statoil UK for two significant energy infrastructure projects in Scotland. While the first of these is a traditional oil field development, the latter is set to be the world’s first floating windfarm which will generate enough electricity to power around 20,000 homes. As well as leasing lifejackets and immersion suits for this project, there is a whole range of other products they can supply to ensure the highest of safety standards from arrival to departure.

SAFETY FIRST Safety starts from the moment wind energy workers leave the shore, be it by helicopter or by boat. Those using the former will be kitted out in tri-approved wind suits with Mk51 lifejackets and helmets and be in constant contact with their colleagues via radio communications.

They will also be armed with personal locator beacons (PLBs) and compressed air emergency breathing systems (CA-EBS) to prepare for every eventuality. Survitec even provides the harnesses for the winches, ensuring workers arrive at the turbines as smoothly and safely as possible. Those arriving by sea can don the dual approved immersion suits with or without separate liner and a Crewsaver Seacrewsader marine lifejacket.

TURBINE WORK

Once on the turbine, a worker’s safety needs can be broadly arranged into three main areas – working at height, tooling and torqueing and general equipment for use inside the turbine. The company covers the whole portfolio of needs…

1. Working at height unit consists of an over the side (OTS) immersion suit, rope-access jackets, harness, karabiner, caploc and ropes, knife cutters and kit bags.

2. Tooling & torqueing unit covers power tools

3. Testing, maintenance and servicing of equipment to ensure everything is in in full working order.

Once within the turbine, workers need equipment cabinets for safe stowage of first aid kits, emergency rescue
