NEW WINDFARM SIMULATOR

Waked windfarm flow simulated with the new application.

High performance in wind turbine wake modelling is key to the planning, monitoring and operation of windfarms. Improved accuracy directly reduces the cost of energy generated

The new WakeBlaster simulator provides this performance and enables the implementation of a range of further innovative applications.

CURRENT MODEL Current industry models first reduce the 3D problem of a waked flow in a wind farm to 2D and solve it for a single turbine, then empirically superimpose the results. The atmospheric boundary layer is represented by mean values of the wind speed profile, turbulence and air density. Such models are no longer adequate for the levels of accuracy now demanded. Meanwhile, 3D CFD models using LES/DES are used in university- based research. Although detailed, these models are time-consuming and not yet suitable for industrial application.

DIFFERENT APPROACH A different approach has been taken with WakeBlaster. It uses a purpose-

built 3D RANS solver that captures the complex nature of the multi-waked flow field. The level of sophistication is carefully chosen to be suited to the intended target applications, making the software accurate yet faster than real- time, even for very large windfarms.

KEY FEATURES INCLUDE…

» Providing fast, scalable, accurate and cost-effective solutions to windfarm performance modelling

» Allowing for dynamic changes to windfarm states and control

» Using time domain simulation which including temporal and spatial

strategies dependencies

VALIDATION WakeBlaster is validated with over 20 years of operational data from over 15 windfarms, adding accuracy to performance. Application cases include

wind energy resource assessment, operational data assessment, real-time windfarm monitoring & optimisation and short-term wind power forecasting.

FUNDING WakeBlaster, developed by ProPlanEn, is offered as a SaaS component with an open API. Development of the system was co-funded by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK and supported by major windfarm operators.

ADVICE, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ProPlanEn is a wind energy consultancy founded by Dr Wolfgang Schlez in 1995 to deliver independent advice, carry out industrial research and develop software tools. Clients include major consultants, operators and manufacturers.
