IN-SERVICE MAINTENANCE – RIGHT FIRST TIME RESULTS


In the April edition of this magazine we explored the similarities between ‘regular’ factory-based maintenance and the more challenging engineering environments presented by wind turbines, whether onshore or offshore

The article took a holistic view of the many different components of effective maintenance and highlighted the importance of MRO chemicals.


Selecting the correct maintenance chemicals to ensure that scheduled tasks can be completed on time is vital; but with the multiple global brands available, and hundreds of product types, it can be a complicated filtering process. Here we take a look at some specific, product-level examples of tried and tested applications that can offer ‘right-first-time’ results.


ELASTOMERIC BEARING CARE Starting from the ground up the ongoing refurbishment of offshore monopile assets where instances of grout failure may have occurred and have been remedied with the installation of elastomeric spring bearings (and the specification in new installations), a high quality silicone grease should be used to not only prevent wear to the bearing elements but to seal out moisture and environmental degradation. INSIDE THE NACELLE


Moving up the monopile to the nacelle, the maintenance requirements become more mundane and in line with the usual challenges of engineering. Service life and performance of critical lubrications systems for the gearbox and associated shaft bearings should not be scrimped on with manufacturers specifications on the greases and oils followed explicitly. The maintenance of the conditioning monitoring system of the heavy-duty and stressed components should not only include the relevant software and data updates, but also the inspection and cleaning of electrical contacts to ensure data flow accuracy.


The electronics package installed is critical to remote monitoring and, just like the optics and sensors installed in a land-based manufacturing site, so scheduled inspection and maintenance of the electronics system should not be ignored.
